WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump said he plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from India and levy “a penalty” on the country for buying military equipment and energy from Russia.

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” Trump wrote in a July 30 post on Truth Social.

Trump added that India has “always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

Trump did not elaborate on the penalty.

Trump’s announcement comes before his Aug 1. deadline for higher reciprocal tariffs on goods from nearly 180 countries across the world to go into effect, including the president’s 25% tariff on Indian imports.
