PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi on Tuesday met members of the various multi-party delegations of MPs which have returned after a tour of countries across the world to articulate India’s stand on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and New Delhi’s response to the same. During the meeting that lasted for close to two hours, the PM is learnt to have listened to experiences shared by MPs cutting across party lines and suggested that such endeavours could be institutionalised in future.

Sources said the meeting was more of an informal exchange of experiences and ideas over cups of tea and refreshments. While mostly chiefs of the delegations articulated the experience of their panel, individual MPs also spoke apart from some diplomats who had accompanied them.

“The meeting started at 7 pm and ended at 8.45 pm. The PM listened to all those who spoke rather intently and even shared his views on certain matters. He was happy with the outcome and said we need to institutionalise this,” said an MP, who attended the meeting.

Sources said this was in terms of various committees of Parliament, which have members from all parties, meeting with their counterparts in other countries. According to an MP, some members raised the issue of Parliamentary Friendship Groups that are formed between two countries. “It was said that some applications from other countries are pending with us while ours were pending in other countries, to which the PM said it would be done soon,” an MP said.

Sources said even Opposition MPs such as Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Manish Tewari shared their experiences. They said Tharoor spoke at length to which the PM listened intently. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi could not attend the meeting.

Following Operation Sindoor, seven all-party delegations were dispatched to various world capitals to brief foreign governments on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and India’s response. These delegations were headed by Congress’s Shashi Tharoor; JDU’s Sanjay Kumar Jha; BJP’s Baijayant Panda and Ravishankar Prasad; NCP’s Supriya Sule; Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde; and DMK’s Kanimozhi.

Sources said the PM commended the delegates personally for taking India’s message across the globe, especially those from other parties than his.

“The PM came and personally interacted with each team seated on different tables. He spent considerable time hearing, and engaging with, leaders of the respective teams and gathering feedback especially from members belonging to opposition parties. He commended each delegate personally for voicing India’s message effectively across foreign capitals; senior political leaders such as Shashi Tharoor were among the team leaders to have a detailed discussion with the PM,” said a delegate.

According to sources, there was consensus cutting across party lines that the visits had been successful and that the mixed nature of the panels sent a strong message to the world that India was united on the issue of terrorism.

“The PM was impressed and underlined that this needs to be taken forward. Panels which had gone to the UAE and some Gulf countries articulated how positively they were received and responded to. To this the PM said that he understood since he often travels to these countries and that he had a personal rapport with their leaders,” an MP said.

Sources said the PM had, during his interactions, underlined yet again that India’s retaliation under Operation Sindoor was purely against terrorist infrastructure as well as its “new normal” approach of treating terror incidents as acts of war.
