Public health officials warn of toxic blue-green algae in Colorado

Blue-green algae can grow rapidly and produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and deadly for pets, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
Health officials say if you come in contact with the algae, you should shower or rinse with fresh water immediately. Symptoms in humans can reportedly include low energy, digestive system issues, fever, headaches or sore throat.
If your pet is exposed, officials say you should keep them from licking themselves until they are rinsed with clean, fresh tap water and watch for symptoms. Symptoms in pets can reportedly include drooling, diarrhea and vomiting, low energy, loss of appetite, stumbling and tremors.
If you or your pet shows symptoms, you should contact your health care provider or veterinarian.
Health officials encouraged people to follow posted signs and look for blooms before entering the water.
