The upcoming Fourth of July holiday may be a record-breaking travel period for Texas, according to AAA.

AAA Texas projects 5.7 million Texans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Independence Day holiday period from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6.

AAA Texas says that this year’s domestic travel forecast is an increase of 369,000 Texas travelers compared to last year, and 521,000 more than in 2019.

“Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons, and Independence Day consistently ranks among the most popular times for a getaway,” said Galen Grillo, Vice President and General Manager of AAA Texas. “Following a record-setting Memorial Day forecast, AAA Texas is seeing continued strong demand for both road trips and air travel during the July Fourth holiday period. With the holiday falling on a Friday this year, many travelers are planning extended weekends or full-week vacations to spend quality time with family and friends.”

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from MMGY’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM. The PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. MMGY contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, forecast U.S. travel behavior and position brand, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 19, 2025.

Because AAA holiday forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes, whether traveling for work or leisure. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

The Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6. Historically, this holiday period included only one weekend. The expanded travel window was instituted starting in 2024 with historical results calculated back to 2019 using the new nine-day period.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — AAA is forecasting a record-breaking travel week for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, with millions of Americans expected to hit the roads—and Kentucky highways are no exception.

According to AAA, more than 72 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home. Of those, more than 61 million are expected to travel by car, making this the busiest Independence Day for road travel ever recorded.

Officials warn that Kentucky drivers should brace for crowded highways and potential delays.

AAA Blue Grass plans to release Kentucky-specific travel numbers during a media event in Lexington next Tuesday. In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to prepare ahead of time—check their vehicles, leave early, and plan for extra time on the road.

• Flying: Nearly 96,000 Michigan residents will fly domestically (+1,000, up 1%).

• Other Modes: More than 160,000 Michiganders will take buses, trains, or cruises (+11,000, up 7%).
