Rescuers race to reach Brazilian tourist after she fell down ravine at popular volcano in Indonesia
Rescue teams were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a rope to try to reach the woman. The 26-year-old woman was last seen by her family on Saturday. She was reported to have fallen to more than 1,600 feet. Her family has set up an Instagram account to raise money for the woman’s rescue. The woman’s family has not yet responded to a request for comment on her disappearance from Mount Rinjani, in Indonesia’s Bali province. The island is known for its idyllic views of the sea, mountains and the city of Bali on the island’s east coast.
The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbors Bali.
Authorities think Marins fell and believe they spotted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather.
“Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather,” Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok’s Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday.
“When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving.”
Hariyadi told the Reuters news agency that Marins was slipping further on the sandy terrain. She was at a depth of about 500 feet when she was first located, but had slipped to more than 1,600 feet by Monday morning, he told Reuters.
Authorities said that rescuers on Saturday had heard Marins’ screams for help and at the time, she was safe but appeared to be in shock, CBS News partner BBC News reported.
Gunung Rinjani National Park said in a social media post that rescue teams were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. The park released images of rescuers at the scene.

“One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool,” said Hariyadi.
“This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location.”
An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers.
“Hang in there Juliana! Help is on the way!” read a post on the account.
The Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.
Marins’ sister, Marianna, told Fantástico that Marins was abandoned by her guide on the trail more than an hour before she fell.
Marins’ last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia.
Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views.
In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

‘We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.’
Speaking to press earlier this week, Nikolas Osman, spokesman for the East Lombok Police, said Ms Marins was hiking as part of a group and fell after suffering fatigue.
Cemara Tunggal, the region in which the dancer fell, is between 8,500-8,900ft above sea level.
‘While heading to the summit of Rinjani on the way to the Cemara Tunggal area, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest.
‘Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey.
‘However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing,’ Osman said.

She said: ‘We received, with great concern and apprehension, information that the rescue team took food, water and warm clothing to Juliana.
‘This is not true. The information we have is that so far they have not been able to reach her, because the rescue ropes were not long enough, in addition to the low visibility.
‘All the videos that were made are lies, including the one of the rescue arriving at her. The video was forged to look like that, along with this message associated with it.
‘We even celebrated. It was a shock to find out that it was a lie.’
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta has sent representatives to monitor the rescue.
It said: ‘The ambassador has personally contacted the International Director of the Search and Rescue Agency and the Director of the Indonesian National Disaster Agency, and has received reports from the local authorities on the progress of the work.’
