For You: 5 Cities You Need To Consider If You’re Retiring in 2025

For instance, rich folks tend to invest in retirement consistently, invest in education, and take better care of their health by purchasing high-quality products and food. You could say these are examples of where poverty lines are drawn in the sand.

Although it’s common to think of the wealthy as people who have a net worth of millions, drive luxury cars or carry expensive designer bags, data on their spending patterns paints a different story. Those with high annual incomes or generational wealth do enjoy extravagant vacations — but they also direct a portion of their wealth to grow their money via investment accounts and other 9 Things the Middle Class Should Consider Downsizing To Save on Monthly Expenses strategies.

Here are the things the rich spend their money on that the poor and middle class typically don’t.

Healthy Food

Tom Corley, a financial planner and author of the book “Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals,” spent five years studying 233 millionaires. What he found was that millionaires spent their money differently, especially when it comes to food.

According to Corley, the wealthy prioritize their health by purchasing whole, organic food. According to his data, 97% of poor people eat more than 300 calories of junk food per day, whereas 70% of wealthy people eat less than 300 calories of junk food per day. He also found that wealthy people exercised more frequently than the poor.

High-Quality Products

Corley’s research also showed that wealthy people were more likely to purchase high-quality clothing and furniture than people who bring in less than the national median household income. They avoid buying fast fashion or cheaply made goods in favor of clothes or furniture that last much longer, which seems counterintuitive but ultimately helps keep up with long-term cost-of-living considerations.

Even if high-quality products cost more, the wealthy prefer longer-lasting products to cheaper items that have to be replaced frequently. It also actually saves them money over time.

Experiences and Events

According to consumer expenditure data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the rich spend more on entertainment, which is a category that includes fees and admissions to sporting events, concerts and museums. It also includes pet toys, hobbies and playground equipment.

It turns out the little things really do make a big difference.

A socio-economist who studied the world’s most successful (and wealthy) people for the past 25 years has now revealed the one habit they all have in common.

And it literally takes less than a minute to do.

Socio-economist Randall Bell studied more than 5,000 people from all walks of life, including students, the unemployed, and billionaires.

In particular, he spent a lot of time studying their daily habits.

“We studied dozens of rituals ranging from writing thank-you notes to eating together as a family,” he said in his new book ‘Me We Do Be’.

And what he learned suggests the little habits you form each day really do matter and can have a big impact on your overall success in life.

Dr Bell calls them “rich habits”.

So, what exactly are these rich habits and how practical are they?

WikiMedia Commons Jeff Bezos / Instagram

Firstly, Dr Bell said highly successful people all make their bed each morning.

So that’s the first ‘rich habit’.

“Those who make their bed in the morning are up to 206.8 percent more likely to be millionaires,” he said.

Why? The socio-economist says it creates a positive mindset first thing in the morning, which then lends itself to a better overall day.

As well as making your bed each morning, Dr Bell listed a few more ‘rich habits’.

Virgin Galactic

One of them was waking up early, at least three hours before your workday started.

This was supported by Thomas Corley who wrote that “getting up at five in the morning to tackle the top three things you want to accomplish in your day allows you to regain control of your life”.

The next one should come as no surprise, but Dr Bell said the world’s most successful people all made time for exercise.

This is supported by billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, who is known for training in jiu-jitsu and MMA three to four times a week, and Richard Branson who wakes up at 5am each day to exercise before work.

“I definitely can achieve twice as much by keeping fit,” Branson told FourHourBodyPress.

But if you really want to up your chances of becoming a multimillionaire, Dr Bell said you should prioritize reading, dedicate time and energy to your romantic relationship, and plan out your day each morning.

Sounds pretty easy right?

I spent 5 years interviewing 233 millionaires—here are 5 things they never waste money on

I spent five years studying 233 millionaires to learn about their habits and the way they think. I spent five years studying 233 millionaires to learn about their habits and the way they think. They came from different backgrounds and experiences, but all had at least $160,000 in annual gross income and $3.2 million in net assets. I was particularly interested in what they spend their money on. But almost everyone told me that what contributed more to their wealth was that they stopped wasting money on certain things:

1. Processed and packaged food

To prioritize their health, they stopped buying low-quality, processed food and instead opted for organic or wholesome foods that did not have preservatives. They often sought out products that could be sourced to their place of origin, and frequented farmers’ markets and grocery stories that were known for high quality produce and meat.

2. Cheaply made products

They refused to drop money on the latest fashion trends, or inexpensive and poorly constructed furniture. Instead, many preferred to invest in timeless quality pieces for their wardrobe and home that were built to last. Often, the cost was two to three times more than the low quality clothing and furniture. But they were comfortable making bigger purchases, because it would still be less expensive than constantly replacing cheap craftsmanship.

3. Major home or car repairs

In the same vein, many of the millionaires told me that given the option, they preferred to spend money on completely replacing things like old roofs, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, furnaces, and even vehicles, rather than putting their hard-earned funds towards expensive repairs. While this was often more costly, they rationalized that something new would last far longer than something repaired, which gave them priceless peace of mind.

4. Outdoor tools and equipment

While some still enjoyed doing outdoor work, like mowing their lawn, weeding, landscaping and trimming, the vast majority — once they got wealthy — hired landscapers to take care of all outdoor upkeep. This meant they no longer spent money repairing or replacing old equipment. Many gave their tools away to family and friends. What they were buying was time. Since they no longer needed to carve out an hour of two every week or month to maintain their property, it gave them more time to rest, relax or engage in recreational activities.

5. Lottery tickets
