Born John Michael Osbourne, the English musician rose to fame as the so-called Prince of Darkness with his heavy metal band, Black Sabbath, which he co-founded in 1968. The band released popular hits like “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “War Pigs.”

After his 1979 departure from the band due to substance abuse issues, Osbourne launched a successful solo career beginning with 1980’s Blizzard of Ozz, which featured his hit track “Crazy Train.” Osbourne became widely known for his wild onstage persona, including infamously biting the head off a bat during a 1982 concert. (He later got a rabies shot.) He went on to release 13 studio albums and was inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — in 2006, with Black Sabbath, and again in 2024 as a solo artist.

Outside of music, Osbourne also had an influence on pop culture: He became a part of the first reality TV show family thanks to his hit MTV show, The Osbournes, which documented the chaotic, often hilarious home life he shared with wife Sharon and their children, Kelly and Jack. The show also illuminated darker sides of his personal life, however, as it revealed his struggles with substance abuse and health issues. The show ran for four seasons, from 2002 to 2005.

Osbourne announced he had been previously diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder, in January 2020, a condition he later told the Los Angeles Times he had lived with since 2003.

“I’m not dying from Parkinson’s. I’ve been working with it most of my life,” the singer told the newspaper. “I’ve cheated death so many times. If tomorrow you read ‘Ozzy Osbourne never woke up this morning,’ you wouldn’t go, ‘Oh, my God!’ You’d go, ‘Well, it finally caught up with him.’”

In addition to Parkinson’s, the musician also suffered other health issues, such as a severe staph infection in 2018 and multiple spinal surgeries following a fall that aggravated an old injury.

In May, Osbourne told the Guardian about his condition: “You wake up the next morning and find that something else has gone wrong. You begin to think this is never going to end.”

TV presenter and comedian Leigh Francis published a touching tribute on Instagram alongside a photo of him, Osbourne and his wife Sharon.

‘The saddest news this evening. All the Osbourne family have always been so kind to me. The loveliest people,’ he wrote.

Ozzy revealed earlier this year that he could no longer walk amid his years-long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

However, he still managed to reunite with his bandmates Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward for their final gig earlier this month.

Ozzy was born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham in 1948, and dropped out of school at the age of 15.

Osbourne relaunched himself as a reality tv star in The Osbournes in the early 2000s, after getting clean from drink and drugs with the help of Sharon. It saw two of his and Sharon’s children, Kelly and Jack, become stars in their own right, whilst their other daughter Aimee declined to appear. Above: Osbourne with Sharon, Jack and Kelly

After serving two months in prison for burglary, he decided to pursue his love of music and by 1970 Black Sabbath had gained a huge following in the US and UK with the release of their first album.

Ozzy quit the band in 1978 and divorced his first wife Thelma Mayfair, who he had two children with, four years later, amid his ongoing substance abuse problems.

He went on to marry second wife Sharon Osbourne, who helped him transform into a successful solo artist and the couple had three children together.

Ozzy gained a whole new audience of fans with the family’s reality TV show The Osbournes in 2001.

He is survived by his wife Sharon and his five children, Jessica, Louis, Aimee, Kelly and Jack.

Ozzy Osbourne dies at 76, just weeks after final Black Sabbath reunion

Ozzy Osbourne has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news Tuesday morning, saying he passed “surrounded by love.” Ozzy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019 and had been struggling with his health over the years, including multiple surgeries and a spinal injury. He officially retired from touring in 2023. Ozzy’s final show was on July 5 with the original Black Sabbath lineup: Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, for the first time in 20 years. The historic farewell was exactly the kind of emotional, full-circle, and out-with-a-bang sendoff only Ozzy could’ve pulled off. He brought darkness, humor, and chaos to the mainstream as a pioneer of heavy metal. He battled decades of drug and alcohol addiction, survived multiple overdoses, near-fatal injuries, rabies shots, arrests, lawsuits, and lived under a tabloid microscope. Despite his fame, Ozzy always spoke of his children as his greatest joy.

His family confirmed the news Tuesday morning, saying he passed “surrounded by love.” “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” they wrote in a statement signed by his wife Sharon Osbourne, and their children Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis, whose mom is Thelma Riley. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy at this time.” Ozzy was also the father of Jessica, from his first marriage to Riley.

His passing comes 17 days after the Prince of Darkness took the stage alongside the original Black Sabbath lineup: Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, for the first time in 20 years. The historic farewell was exactly the kind of emotional, full-circle, and out-with-a-bang sendoff only Ozzy could’ve pulled off.

Legends never die

Ozzy wasn’t just the bat-biting frontman of Black Sabbath. He brought darkness, humor, and chaos to the mainstream as a pioneer of heavy metal. From the band’s debut in 1970 to solo hits like “Crazy Train” and “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” Ozzy was a musical genius.

A survivor, Ozzy’s life was full of ups and downs. He battled decades of drug and alcohol addiction, survived multiple overdoses, near-fatal injuries, rabies shots, arrests, lawsuits, and lived under a tabloid microscope. “I overdosed on drugs many times, so I am lucky to be here anyway. I’ve had so many brushes with death that I’m the Comeback Kid. If I was a cat, I’d have 33 lives,” he told The Sun in 2019.

He also helped reinvent the idea of a rockstar, not just as a performer, but as a person. In the 2000s, The Osbournes brought a new crazy train to reality TV as they stepped into the role of suburban dad. A foul-mouthed, gothic, and at times confused, mumbling entertainer that was all too relatable. A whole generation met him through the chaos of MTV, and would fall in love with him.

Of course, there is no one mourning more than his family. Through it all, one constant was his wife, Sharon. His wife, manager, and partner in chaos, the two of them endured scandals, health scares, and fame at its most intrusive. They just quietly celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on July 4, the day before Ozzy’s final reunion show. The timing of it all feels cosmic.

The rocker was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019 and had been struggling with his health over the years, including multiple surgeries and a spinal injury. He officially retired from touring in 2023.

Despite his fame, Ozzy always spoke of his children as his greatest joy. He got to witness his daughter Kelly get engaged to Slipknot musician Sid Wilson, with whom she shares a son. Wilson proposed to her backstage at the reunion show, and in one of the last clips of Ozzy, he hilariously tells Sid before he pops the question, “f**k off, you’re not marrying my daughter.”

What adds an extra layer to the moment is that Kelly would probably never have met Sid if it weren’t for her dad. They have known each other for over 20 years, first meeting in 1999 when Slipknot and Ozzy headlined Ozzfest.

Now, after one final show, one last family moment, and a legacy no one can touch, Ozzy is at rest.
