Plans for the new hospital include specialty services, operating rooms and diagnostic imaging, with the flexibility to expand based on future demand.

The project is part of a broader effort by Novant Health to strengthen its presence in South Carolina by building new facilities, recruiting physician experts and delivering care that puts patients first. With the addition of the Patewood Drive hospital, the nonprofit health system will continue to expand services in a way that is tailored to the unique needs of each community, including holistic, seamless care coordination across the region. Novant Health already owns urgent care facilities across South Carolina as well as hospitals and practices on the coast.
Ryan Lee was named president of Novant Health’s Greenville area in April. Lee most recently served as president of Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, where he helped elevate the facility to be designated as South Carolina’s first Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery.

Greenville: Novant Health releases plans to build first hospital
Novant Health has several locations in the South Carolina Lowcountry and multiple locations in North Carolina. Officials said the $132 million will be built on more than 11 acres of land off Patewood Drive with a capacity of 20 beds. The non-profit health system said it has filed a certificate of need — a mandatory step to build a new health facility — to build the hospital. It bought the property last May for more than $17 million for the property on Pate Wood Drive in Greenville, South Carolina. The hospital will also be constructed alongside a medical office building, which will be constructed on the same site as the hospital, officials said. It could be open as early as 2027, if approved by South Carolina officials, which is the same year that the CERTIFICATE OF NEED REQUIREMENT in South Carolina will go away. The nonprofit’s first hospital in the Upstate off Interstate 385 will be called the “Goverment,” which means it will focus on technology and technology-based care.

We see the future of health care growing in the outpatient setting.”The non-profit health system said it has filed a certificate of need — a mandatory step to build a new health facility — to build the hospital on Patewood Drive. It bought the Patewood Drive property last May for more than $17 million.Novant Health has several locations in the South Carolina Lowcountry and multiple locations in North Carolina.Officials said a medical office building will also be constructed alongside the hospital. “It allows us to provide care in a smaller footprint,” Lee said. “That means it’s easier to navigate for patients. You want to go to the best hospital. You want to receive the best care you can,” said Eliza Vanciu, who is visiting from Chicago.”It makes every hospital system a little better,” said Greenville resident Nate Snider. “It’s another hospital for the people of the area, which I’m all for.”Novant Health said it’s working on the design of the upcoming hospital but said as a nonprofit, they’re also looking forward to helping people outside of the facility. “This is a start, and we’re looking forward to what the future will hold for Novant Health here,” Lee said.Lee said if the state approves its certificate of need in the next few months, the hospital could be complete as soon as 2027. South Carolina is also doing away with the certificate of need requirement beginning in 2027.

Lee is currently serving as president of Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville near Beaufort. Prior to that, Lee spent a decade in executive leadership roles with top healthcare organizations in Florida and Virginia.
Alongside Lee’s appointment, Novant Health has officially filed a certificate of need application with the South Carolina Department of Public Health to build a new 20-bed outpatient-focused hospital in Greenville. This hospital will be the first step in a broader expansion plan for the system in the Upstate.
Pending regulatory approval, the planned facility will open in early 2027 and feature state-of-the-art operating rooms, diagnostic imaging and services all tailored to meet the growing demand for outpatient and specialty care in Greenville and surrounding communities.

Novant’s proposed plan would require an agreement from the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff and would also look to build an additional health care and office building at 221 Patewood Drive, which would fall outside the scope of the $132 million private investment.

This proposed investment builds upon Novant Nealth’s February 2024 acquisition of the East Cooper Medical Center in Charleston, Hilton Head Medical Center, and Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville. Since the 2024 acquisition, Novant Health has added three hospitals, 52 doctors’ care offices, 27 physician offices, and 20 physical therapy clinics across South Carolina.
In September 2024, Novant Health announced plans to build a new full-service community hospital campus in Bluffton.
Thus far, the Upstate has seen six locations of doctor’s care urgent care clinics and physical care clinics added as part of Novant’s UCI Medical Affiliates network.
