Samsung just gave the best pitch for Apple’s ‘iPhone Fold’ timing
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is launching next year, a full seven years after Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold debuted. Both models cumulatively had 25% higher pre-orders this year, and Fold7 scored the most pre- orders of any Z Fold device in US history. Samsung exec: “Foldables have reached an inflection point as they are becoming a mainstream choice for users.” The company isn’t explicitly saying, “It took until now to create a great foldable” But that messaging is certainly implicit in its stated reasons for success. And the latest Z series advancements are fueling new levels of interest from consumers.
Samsung says years of tech improvements have led to new mainstream success
Samsung has published a new press release touting the success of its just-launched Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 products.
As highlighted by our sister site 9to5Google, the Fold7 is so far outperforming its predecessor by 50%. Both models cumulatively had 25% higher pre-orders this year, and Fold7 scored the most pre-orders of any Z Fold device in US history.
Why the newfound consumer demand? Per a Samsung exec quoted in the press release, it might just be that the technology has finally gotten good enough to go mainstream.
“Foldables have reached an inflection point as they are becoming a mainstream choice for users,” said Drew Blackard, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung Electronics America. “Now on our seventh generation, we’ve addressed consumer feedback year after year and have arrived at the kind of experience you can’t get on any other device. When people go hands-on with a Z series device, they’re hooked — and now it’s all coming together with record-breaking numbers.”
This mention of addressing years of consumer feedback in its latest models is repeated elsewhere in the press release. So too is the idea of the latest models’ advancements being the reason for their success.
Samsung pioneered the foldable smartphone category more than six years ago, and now, in its seventh generation, is raising the bar on what a smartphone can do. Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 offer powerful performance, refined AI experiences, and enhanced durability in incredibly thin and light designs. And the latest Z series advancements are fueling new levels of interest from consumers.
The company isn’t explicitly saying, “It took until now to create a great foldable.” But that messaging is certainly implicit in its stated reasons for success.
Which of course brings things back to Apple.
Rumors of a foldable iPhone have been around for years, but the company has held off ever launching one. Next year, that’s finally changing.
Though iPhone Fold’s 2026 launch could arguably be considered a year late, that’s a very different story than it being seven years late. All signs indicate a good enough foldable iPhone wasn’t viable before now. Thus, Apple’s launch timing for the iPhone Fold, at least based on Samsung’s experience, seems just about right.
