Phone theft has become a serious problem. Whether a rogue cyclist snatches it from your hands while you’re out on a walk or a pickpocket swipes it from your backpack, the issue is real and requires consistent vigilance from users.

Samsung recently called on customers in the United Kingdom, where this issue is becoming widespread, to enable theft protection features on their Galaxy devices. The company is now urging customers in the United States to do the same.

One UI 7 brings additional theft protection features to Samsung devices

Theft protection is Samsung’s suite of features that are designed to save personal data of phone theft victims. It includes features like Theft Detection Lock which relies on machine learning to identify motions related to snatching and locks the screen instantly to prevent data theft. Advertisement

Offline Device Lock automatically locks the screen if the phone is disconnected from the network an extended period of time. Lastly, Remote Lock lets users who’ve been victims of theft to lock their phones using their phone number and a simple verification step.

One UI 7 has also brought additional anti-robbery features like Identity Check, which requires biometric authentication for any changes to security settings when the device is in an unfamiliar location. There’s also a one-hour security delay when someone tries to reset biometric data, providing owners a vital buffer to lock the stolen phone from a connected device before an unauthorized user can gain access to the data.
