It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the beloved Chief CLT of Earth & Physical Sciences at York College, Mr. Joel Gomez. His presence was a vital part of our campus, and his absence is deeply felt by all who knew him.

A Glimpse into Joel’s Life and Legacy

For those of us who were fortunate to interact with Joel, his typical response to “How you doing, Joel?”—”Still a-live”—will forever resonate in our memories. Despite the circumstances, Joel had the unique gift of spreading joy, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond his physical presence.

  • Joel Gomez was a proud York graduate, having earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physics in 1982 after moving to the U.S. from his native Haiti.
  • He was devoted to using his technical skills effectively, which he did during his years in industry travels.
  • In 1985, Joel returned to York College as a Physics CLT, guiding thousands of budding science majors over the next 34 years.
  • As a long-time advisor to the Haitian Student Association, Joel was deeply involved in student life and mentorship.

Path of Dedication and Influence

Joel’s dedication to York College and its students was undeniable. Even when expressing his frustrations about injustices in Haiti or situations like equipment mishandling, Joel often ended with a chuckle, a testament to his resilient spirit. His passion for education and his students made him a cornerstone of the York College community.

He embodied the phrase, “York is like a family,” as he not only supported the students but also shared his life with them. His colleagues fondly remember his voice echoing in the lab, and his profound impact will be cherished forever.

Family and Faith

Joel was not just an educator and mentor but also a man of strong faith as a Seventh Day Adventist. He cherished his family, including his beloved wife Mely, and his amazing mother. Joel’s personal connections were as significant to him as his professional ones, making him a remarkable human being.

His Final Goodbyes

Pauline, our department admin, recalls Joel’s friendly and supportive nature, going so far as to consider him a “big brother.” His usual parting words, “May the Force be with you,” reflect the deep connections and positive influence he had on people around him.

Services celebrating his life will be live-streamed from Pennsylvania on Thursday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to attend virtually can contact Pauline Miles for access information. For more details, Joel’s obituary can be found here.
