Main Campus Construction: View Details Before You Arrive

South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) has been recognized with a prestigious Platinum award for its outstanding contributions to promoting organ, eye, and tissue donation across the state of Georgia. This accolade highlights SGMC’s ongoing commitment to saving lives through enhanced donor registrations and community educational initiatives.

SGMC Health’s Platinum Award Achievement

Partnering with LifeLink® of Georgia and Donate Life Georgia, SGMC conducted an extensive campaign aimed at encouraging more people to register as organ donors. The campaign, part of the nationwide DoNation Campaign, spanned from October 2023 to September 2024 and involved various engaging activities:

  • Flag-raising ceremonies to honor donors.
  • Honor walks showcasing the bravery and compassion of families who consent to organ donation.
  • Media initiatives to spread awareness and encourage public participation.

SGMC’s Main, Berrien, and Lanier campuses were crucial collaborators among the 87 hospital partners in the Lifebuoy service area, which worked diligently to support organ donation efforts and enhance this critical healthcare dimension.

The Importance of Organ Donation

“Organ donation is a profound act of love and generosity that transforms lives,” said Brian Sayre, Director of Chaplain Services. “At SGMC Health, we are honored to support this sacred gift, providing comfort and care to donors and their families as they share the ultimate expression of hope. It is a privilege to witness the courage and compassion that makes the gift of life possible.”

The need for organ donors remains significant on both national and state levels:

  • Over 103,000 individuals are currently on the transplant waiting list in the United States.
  • More than 3,000 are waiting in Georgia alone.
  • 17 people die each day in the U.S. while waiting for a transplant.
  • Approximately one person is added to the waiting list every nine minutes.

Who Can Become a Donor?

Anyone can register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor, regardless of age or health. Making the decision is simple and can be done through various channels:

  • When obtaining a driver’s license via the Department of Driver Services.
  • While purchasing a hunting or fishing license through the Department of Natural Resources.
  • Online at www.DonateLifeGeorgia.org.
