SGMC Health honored April Fulton, nurse at SGMC Women’s Health on Patterson Street, as the latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This international recognition celebrates nurses who go above and beyond in delivering compassionate, skillful, and patient-centered care.

Fulton was nominated by her manager for her unwavering commitment to her team and patients, even during a time of personal importance. Scheduled to be on vacation to help move her daughter home from college, she learned that a coworker had to unexpectedly call out due to a family emergency. This left a critical gap in clinic coverage, especially for the two busy physicians she supports.

Without hesitation, Fulton drove from Valdosta to Statesboro to complete the move, then returned home at 5 a.m. the next morning to come into work on her day off. Her decision ensured that the physicians had the support needed and that patient care continued seamlessly.

“This is a powerful example of April’s unwavering dedication not only to her team but also to the patients we serve,” her manager shared. “She consistently puts others before herself and demonstrated exceptional integrity, sacrifice, and teamwork. April’s actions inspire those around her and remind us of the impact one nurse can have in upholding a culture of support, reliability, and compassion.”

DAISY Awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate of recognition, a hand-carved sculpture titled A Healer’s Touch from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe, and a special floral arrangement of daisies, generously donated by The Flower Gallery, SGMC Health’s local DAISY Award sponsor.

SGMC Health offers a variety of recognition programs to honor employees who embody its core values of “Remarkable People, Extraordinary Care, Human Kindness.” To learn more about these awards and other recognition programs, visit sgmc.org/recognition.
