At least 15 students from Karnataka remain stranded in Iran amid growing tensions after a major Israeli airstrike on Tehran. Eleven of the students are from Alipur village in Gauribidanur taluk, Chikkaballapur district, and four are from Bengaluru. The Israeli strike on Tehran on June 13 marked a serious escalation in the long-simmering conflict between Israel and Iran. Israel claimed the attack targeted military and nuclear sites. Reports suggest several high-ranking Iranian nuclear and military scientists were killed. “She said she’s safe,” 17-year-old Hassan Syed told The News Minute, “but the uncertainty is scary.”

His sister, 23-year-old Fathima (name changed) is a fourth-year dental student at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). On the evening of June 16, she messaged Hassan to say she had been relocated from Tehran to an undisclosed location in northern Iran. The university, she added, had instructed students not to share their whereabouts.

Fathima is one of at least 15 students from Karnataka who remain stranded in Iran amid growing tensions after a major Israeli airstrike on Tehran. Eleven of the students are from Alipur village in Gauribidanur taluk, Chikkaballapur district, and four are from Bengaluru.

Hassan, who has been in touch with several families in Alipur, shared updated information about the students’ locations. According to him, ten students are enrolled at Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran: Syed Abbas Askari, Mir Esam Raza, Syed Mohammed Taqi, Syed Jazib Ahmed, Syed Mohsin Raza, Syeda Zaineb Baqri, Nadeem Hussain, Naser Hussain, Daniya Ulfat, and Maryam Fatima.

Three others — Syeda Faizi, Syeda Mufharry, and Habibe Zahra — are studying at TUMS. Syeda Sohan Mehdi is at Iran University of Medical Sciences, while Syed Abbas Yawar, who has just one exam left to complete his MBBS, is enrolled at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences.

Mir Nashwan Raza, a 17-year-old from Alipur, said his 19-year-old brother Esam Raza, a second-year student at Shaheed Beheshti University, had been relocated to the city of Qom along with a group of fellow students. “The university told them they’ll stay in Qom for two to three days. After that, if India issues an evacuation order, they will leave,” he said.

In Shiraz, 25-year-old Syed Abbas Yawar remains in contact with his family. “But there is a lot of fear among the students,” said his younger brother, Syed Ahmed Yawar. “There was an attack in Shiraz yesterday evening, and the disturbance has shaken everyone.”

The Israeli strike on Tehran on June 13 marked a serious escalation in the long-simmering conflict between Israel and Iran. Israel claimed the attack targeted military and nuclear sites. Reports suggest several high-ranking Iranian nuclear and military scientists were killed. In the aftermath, many students faced disruptions in communication and were moved from university campuses to safer, undisclosed locations.

Earlier, TNM reported that Nadeem Hussain and his parents in Bengaluru had reached out to the Karnataka Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Forum for assistance.

In response, Dr Aarti Krishna, who serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Forum, wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on June 15 seeking urgent evacuation of the students. “I am writing to request your help in evacuating nine Karnataka students stuck in Toufiq Alley, Zafraniya area, Tehran, Iran, who had gone there to study medicine,” her letter said.

Families say the students remain in limbo; frightened, scattered, and desperate for official intervention to ensure their safety and bring them home.
