Slovenia bans Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu from entering, citing ICC arrest warrant

Slovenia bans Israeli Prime Minister from entering the country. The move is in response to an International Criminal Court ruling. The court ruled that Israel must end its occupation of parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The U.S. government says the ban is in line with international law.

Slovenia on Thursday (September 25, 2025) said it was banning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from entering the European Union country to underscore its defence of international law.

The decision was linked to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against the Israeli Prime Minister, Foreign Ministry official Neva Grasic said, according to the official STA news agency.

The EU nation of some 2 million people, which recognised a Palestinian state last year, has been a vocal critic of Israeli actions in Gaza and Thursday’s move against Netanyahu was apparently designed to underscore the country’s policies.

Slovenia already had barred Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from entering the country and imposed an arms embargo on Israel.

“All countries that are bound by the international court, including Slovenia, must not recognise the situation resulting from Israel’s illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, and must not offer any support in maintaining this situation,” she added.

The Slovenian government said on X that the decision sends “a clear message to the state of Israel that Slovenia expects consistent respect for the decisions of international courts and international humanitarian law.”

By doing so, Slovenia “confirms its commitment to international law, universal values of human rights and a principled and consistent foreign policy,” the government added.

Slovenia imposes travel ban on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

The decision was linked to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Israeli prime minister. The move marks the first time a European Union (EU) member state has targeted Israel’s leader with such a measure. Ljubljana: Slovenia on Thursday, September 25, announced a travel ban on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Reuters reported, citing the government.

The decision was linked to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Israeli prime minister, Foreign Ministry official Neva Grasic said, according to the official STA news agency.

The move marks the first time a European Union (EU) member state has targeted Israel’s leader with such a measure. It follows a series of steps taken by Ljubljana in recent months to distance itself from Israel’s war in Gaza.

In June 2024, Slovenia recognised Palestine as an independent state, joining Ireland, Norway and Spain. A month later, it barred two far-right Israeli ministers from entering the country, accusing them of making “genocidal statements” against Palestinians.

In August, Slovenia imposed an arms embargo on Israel and prohibited the import, export and transit of military equipment, as well as banning goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s nearly 23-month offensive in the enclave has killed more than 65,400 Palestinians, according to local authorities. Human rights groups and United Nations experts warn that the ongoing blockade has pushed hundreds of thousands to the brink of famine and accuse Israel of atrocities amounting to genocide.
