Celebrating Innovation: Starkville Students Shine at 2025 Region V Science Fair
The Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) has plenty to celebrate as students demonstrated their scientific prowess at the 2025 Mississippi Region V Science Fair held at Mississippi State University. With a total of 30 awards, Starkville students showcased the depth and breadth of their research talents.
Katie Chung Takes Top Honors
Katie Chung, a 10th grader at Starkville High School, stole the show by earning the Best of Fair award for her project titled “Mercury Extraction Using Lignin Foams” in the Earth and Environmental Science category. Her innovative approach involved using sulfur-based lignin foam to extract harmful mercury successfully from contaminated water. Additionally, Chung’s project received the prestigious Office of Naval Research Award, RICOH USA Inc. Award, US Agency for International Development Award, and the Global Environmental Impact Award.
Other Notable Achievements
- Theo Ahn, a 9th grader, tied for 1st place in the Earth and Environmental Science category with his project “Tiny Breath, Big Impact: How Insect Respiration Shapes the Carbon Cycle”.
- Amy Choi, another 10th grader, earned 2nd place in the Engineering Mechanics category for her project on electromagnetic interference in power semiconductor switches.
- Jaden Clare Everett, a 9th grader, clinched 1st place in the Animal Science category with her project on genetic markers for scrapie resistance in sheep.
Middle School Successes
The younger scholars from Partnership Middle School also made waves, earning an impressive 18 awards in total. Special accolades included:
- Sage Scarpulla’s receipt of the American Psychological Association Award in the Behavioral and Social Science category.
- Nicholas Sescu’s recognition with the Nailed It! Award for exemplary presentation skills.
Broadening Horizons Through Science
Participation in the science fair was mandatory for 6th graders at Partnership Middle School for the first time, leading to an inspiring display of talent and dedication. This requirement allowed many students to step out of their comfort zones and excel at regional levels.
The Value of Scientific Endeavors
For Starkville High students, science fair participation remains voluntary, but those who compete delve deeply into topics of personal interest. The competition serves as an opportunity to build critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Sarah Langford, a coordinating instructor at SHS, emphasized the importance of these events in igniting a passion for science and learning.
“Each of these students has showcased an impressive commitment to scientific inquiry, and I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements,” Langford shared, highlighting the meticulous efforts and creativity displayed by the students.
Katie Chung: A Rising STEM Star
For first-time participant Katie Chung, the science fair served as both a challenge and a stepping stone toward her interest in STEM careers. “I think the science fair is an excellent way to gain exposure to the scientific method,” she explained. Chung’s project not only showcased her academic skills but also highlighted her ability to think globally about essential environmental issues.
Building a Comprehensive Skillset
Chung attributes her success to support from teachers, mentors, and resources at Mississippi State University. Her ability to convey complex research ideas effectively has reinforced her belief in the importance of clear communication.
“Having the knowledge is one thing, but the real challenge is being able to effectively communicate it to others,” she said. “This skill is vital not just for science fairs but in all aspects of life.”
Conclusion
The triumphs of Starkville’s young scientists at the Region V Science Fair are a testament to their creativity, perseverance, and the robust educational environment provided by SOCSD. As these students look forward to future competitions, they continue to inspire their peers to explore science and beyond. Starkville’s educators, parents, and community remain committed to nurturing every student’s potential, igniting a spark that will fuel lifelong learning.
