Oslo police on Friday filed multiple criminal charges against Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, including rape, sexual assault, and bodily harm following a months-long investigation. Høiby, 28, is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon and has faced scrutiny since his arrest in 2024 over preliminary charges of rape, assault, and criminal damage. Police now allege that the case involves a “double-digit” number of victims, reports AP.

Oslo Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski said Høiby cooperated during questioning and that evidence includes witness statements, text messages, and results from police searches.

The formal charges include one count of rape involving intercourse, two counts of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault, and two counts of bodily harm.

“I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number,” Kruszewski told reporters.

Høiby’s defence attorney, Petar Sekulic, told AP in an email that Høiby is “taking the accusations very seriously,” but denies most of the allegations, especially those related to sexual abuse and violence.

The Norwegian royal palace declined to comment, saying the case would proceed through regular legal channels, according to Norwegian news agency NTB.

Høiby, once affectionately known as “Little Marius,” grew up with the royal family but currently lives separately, according to reports. He remains free pending a possible trial and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

He has previously spoken about his struggles with cocaine use. His biological father, Morton Borg, served prison time for drug and violent offences.

The charges against the Norwegian royal come after months of investigation involving a “double digit” number of alleged victims.

Police dealing with ‘double-digit’ allegations

Hoiby has faced scrutiny since and has been at the center of an investigation involving a “double-digit” number of victims.

“I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number,” Oslo Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski said at a news conference.

He added that the charges include one case of rape involving intercourse, two cases of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault and two cases of bodily harm.

The attorney said the evidence had been gathered from sources including text-messages, police searches and witness testimonies.

In an email to The Associated Press, Defense attorney Petar Sekulic said Hoiby was “taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn’t acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases — especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence.”

The Crown princess’ eldest son is her child from a different relationship before she was married to Crown Prince Haakon.

Hoiby grew up with the privelege of the other royals but does not hold a formal title or have a public role.

After the initial allegations of bodily harm last year, Hoiby admitted to acts of violence directed towards his partner under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. In a statement to the public, he spoke of psychological problems and long-term drug abuse.

Kruszewski explained that evidence in the case was collected from a range of sources, including text messages, witness statements, and police searches.

He outlined the charges, which include one case of rape involving intercourse, two cases of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault, and two cases of bodily harm.

When asked about the number of alleged victims, Kruszewski said, “I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number,” as reported by the Associated Press.

Høiby’s defence lawyer, Petar Sekulic, told the Associated Press via email that his client “is absolutely taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn’t acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases — especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence”.

Høiby remains free while awaiting a possible trial.

The royal palace has kept its comments to a minimum, telling Norwegian newswire NTB that it would not be making any statements while the case is still moving through the “normal procedures” of the legal system.

Høiby, who previously lived with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, now resides in a separate house nearby, according to his lawyer. He has previously spoken openly about his struggles with substance abuse, admitting to cocaine use and addiction.

After his August 2024 arrest, Høiby released a public statement taking responsibility for some of his actions, saying, “I have several mental disorders which mean that throughout my upbringing and adult life, I have had, and still have, challenges. I have struggled with substance abuse for a long time, something I have been in treatment for in the past. I will now resume this treatment and take it very seriously,” per Hola.

He also apologised to his family, saying, “I know that my actions have largely rubbed off on you. So to you my love, I’m sorry. This should never have happened, and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

The Norwegian press has noted that while Høiby grew up in the public eye and enjoyed the same privileges as his royal siblings, he does not hold a royal title and does not undertake official duties. His biological father, Morton Borg, has previously served time in prison for drug and violent offences.

At this stage, the investigation is complete and the case will proceed through the Norwegian legal system. The police have said that other members of the royal family were not questioned, as their involvement was not considered relevant to the investigation.

Speaking last December, the Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 51, said it had been a “challenging year” for the Norwegian royal house, so much so that the family has sought “professional help”, admitting that without that professional intervention, they would have been unable to fulfil their royal duties.

Following the latest charges, the palace was quoted by the Norwegian newswire NTB saying it would not comment while the case winds its way through the “normal procedures.”
