The TRACERS mission is led by David Miles, an associate professor for the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The mission consists of two satellites, that will “study the interactions between the magnetic fields of the Sun and Earth,” according to the University of Iowa.
Once the satellites are in orbit, they will gather data to help scientists better understand how to predict space weather patterns.
“When we have solar storms or big space weather events, we can get errors in GPS, throw everything off course, and in Iowa that’s actually a real impact for us,” said University of Iowa professor Allison Jaynes.
The TRACERS spacecraft is set to launch at 1:13 Wednesday afternoon.
