Steuben County issued a non-essential travel advisory and declared a state of emergency in multiple towns Monday night due to active flooding as more heavy rain hit the region.

Excessive rainfall left multiple state, county and local roads impassable, said Steuben County Director of Public Safety Tim Marshall. Impacted roads included county roads 10, 14, 15, 119, 87, 88, and 89, along with state routes 36, 54, 54A and 248.

A State of Emergency was declared for the towns of Canisteo, Cameron, Bath, Urbana, Pulteney and Wayne due to excessive rainfall and multiple road closures. Residents are urged to travel only in the event of an emergency in these towns.

“First responders and highway crews are assessing damages and responding to various emergency calls,” Marshall said in a release.

“Steuben County is strongly advising that residents avoid all non-essential travel. Help us keep the roads clear for responders to operate. Call 911 only for emergencies. Report wire calls to your local utility.”

Thunderstorms produced heavy rain across the area. At 8:40 p.m., the National Weather Service reported that between 2-3 inches of rain had fallen, with emergency management reporting numerous roads flooded and washed out from West Cameron to Bath, with flash flooding occurring.

A flash flood warning remains in effect until 10:15 p.m. June 9 for central Steuben County, with the National Weather Service warning of flash flooding in Hornell, Bath, Urbana, Canisteo, Howard, Jasper, Pulteney, Avoca, Cameron, Savona, Greenwood, Hammondsport, Hartsville, West Cameron, Kanona, Haskinville, Rheims, Prattsburg, Sonora and Wheeler.

A flood watch also remains in effect in Steuben County through 11 a.m. June 10, along with Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, southern Cayuga, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates counties, as well as northeast Pennsylvania.

A flood watch in Allegany County and Livingston County is in place until 2 a.m. June 10.
