SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM TO HOST TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS DAY AIMED AT ENCOURAGING RGV RESIDENTS TO EMBRACE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE Encouraging healthy living through regular physical activity and more, STHS’ annual community event will feature family-friendly activities focused on the mind, body and soul If you’re hoping to lead a long and healthy life, it’s important to develop wholesome habits like staying physically active, eating well and managing stress. “Health experts estimate that about 25% of the variation in human life span is determined by genetics,” says Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, South Texas Health System. “But the rest can be attributed in large part to how we take care of our bodies, especially if we want to enjoy a good quality of life as we age.” A healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and proper nutrition, positively impacts both physical and mental well-being. It can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart attack and stroke, improve energy levels and enhance an individual’s overall quality of life. Unfortunately, a small percentage of Americans – less than 3% — lead a healthy lifestyle, according to a recent study conducted by Oregon State University researchers, meaning the fail to meet ideal “healthy lifestyle” criteria that reduce a person’s risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Those standards include exercising at least 150 minutes a week, maintaining a body mass index (BMI) below 20% for men and 30% for women, eating a diet that aligns with nutritional guidelines and not smoking. The good news: families who engage in shared healthy habits tend to experience better overall long-term health, leading to increased happiness, improved mental well-being, and a greater sense of connection within the family unit. “Healthy living habits are often nurtured in the home. By prioritizing regular physical activity, nutritious meals and mental well-being, families can help set the foundation for lifelong health,” says Castañeda. “Together, family members can support and encourage one another to reap the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.” So, to help highlight the numerous ways that families can lead a healthy lifestyle as a unit, South Texas Health System is hosting its fifth annual Transform Your Life Health & Wellness Day, a free event featuring engaging, family-friendly activities that focus on the body, mind and spirit. Taking place on Saturday, July 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Texas A&M Higher Education Center at McAllen – located at 6200 Tres Lagos Blvd. – the event will feature Zumba, yoga, pickleball and other exercise classes, healthy cooking demonstrations, mental health-related activities and a special community expo to highlight the resources available locally to help you lead a healthy lifestyle. “From community fitness programs and recreational facilities to city parks and hike-and-bike trails, there are many options available for residents across the Rio Grande Valley to help them lead a healthy lifestyle,” says Castañeda. “Through our annual Transform Your Life Health & Wellness Day, we’re giving community members a taste of those offerings and helping them take the first steps to healthier living.
