Strike near-total in Alappuzha
The nationwide strike called by the joint trade union against the ‘anti-people policies’’ of the Union government was near-total in Alappuzha on Wednesday. Private buses, autorickshaws and taxis also joined the strike, giving a harrowing time for commuters and tourists.
The strike paralysed normal life in the district with educational institutions, shops and commercial establishments remained shut. In view of the Champakulam Moolam boat race, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation conducted a few trips in the region. The State Water Transport department (SWTD) conducted one service from Pulinkunnu in the morning. The department later stopped the services due to lack of passengers. In Alappuzha town, a few motorbikes and private vehicles were out on the roads. The attendance at government offices in the district was considerably low.
The police said that no major incident was reported in the district.
