Student Cohort Innovates Environmental Storytelling and Hydroponics for Future Solutions

Transforming the Future: Harnessing Creativity and Ingenuity through ASU’s Global Futures Impact Scholars

The Dawn of a New Era in Environmental Solutions

In an ambitious move to cultivate a generation of changemakers, Arizona State University (ASU) has introduced the Global Futures Impact Scholars program within its College of Global Futures. This initiative, supported by the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, is empowering students to spearhead projects that address environmental challenges and promote sustainability. Students receive mentorship and up to $5,000 to drive these student-led projects, allowing them to innovate and contribute meaningfully to global solutions.

A Platform for Innovation and Leadership

The inaugural cohort consists of 20 promising students from the College of Global Futures, collaborating to develop vital skills in communication, education, and project management. Divided into four specialized teams, these scholars are crafting solutions designed to make a significant impact on the world.

Bridging Storytelling and Science

  • At the Youth Making Ripples film competition, a project team earned the “Best Scientific Message” accolade with their short film, “The Next Ten Years.” This production, spearheaded by students Linkoyam Painemilla, Alex Arnold, Khair Agusdinata, and Lucas Flemming, is a compelling call-to-action for waterway protection.

The students’ film encapsulates the urgency of environmental preservation and exemplifies the power of storytelling as a catalyst for change.

Reimagining Agriculture Through Hydroponics

  • Natalia Nava Bravo, a first-year transfer student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in sustainability, is pioneering a hydroponics system startup called CUCSUA. Her initiative is a response to the pressing need for sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Paige Herbert, another standout scholar, debuted her short story, “Remember the Rain,” at the Change the World showcase, advocating for innovative environmental storytelling to inspire water conservation actions.

Hands-On Experience and Diverse Opportunities

ASU’s program encourages student involvement in diverse opportunities, including:

  • Shadowing intop research labs
  • Participation in global education programs
  • Engagement in community workshops focusing on energy solutions
  • Development of documentary projects to highlight research efforts in the global futures ecosystem

By providing this experiential learning platform, ASU equips scholars to recognize and utilize their potential for real-world contributions to sustainability.

Nurturing Future Leaders in Sustainability

Laura McGeary, a management intern and Master of Sustainability Solutions student, mentors these promising scholars, guiding them through the complexities of transforming ideas into tangible impacts. By fostering a culture of support and creativity, the program reduces barriers for students, allowing them to pursue dreams that resonate with both their ambitions and personal values.

“I hope that as students settle into their studies and build a career path for themselves, this program will help them continue to see ‘making a positive impact’ as core to their decision-making,” said McGeary.

Exploratory Tours and Educational Enrichment

To broaden their horizons, scholars are exposed to cutting-edge ideas and technologies through various tours and lectures:

  • A walk through the Global Futures Laboratory led by Dave White, director of the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation, provides insights into groundbreaking research.
  • In the Human Biometeorology Lab, students encounter innovations like ANDI, the thermal manikin, that are shaping scientific understanding.
  • A demonstration of the SolarSPELL initiative by associate professor Laura Hosman teaches students how solar-powered digital libraries operate globally, revolutionizing education accessibility.

The introduction of these diverse opportunities not only equips the students with vital knowledge but also ignites their passion to pursue unique solutions.

Forging a Path Toward a Sustainable Future

Through strategic collaborations and innovative thinking, the Global Futures Impact Scholars are primed to leave lasting marks on the world. By providing students a space to nurture ideas without the constraints of traditional obstacles, ASU is setting the stage for a generation of leaders capable of shaping a sustainable future.

This initiative underscores ASU’s commitment to not only educate but also instill a sense of responsibility and inspiration in tomorrow’s environmental leaders, ensuring that the impact of their work resonates far beyond the university setting.
