As summer approaches, Americans are considering their travel plans. July and August are peak summer travel times, but this year, Americans are weighing the cost of getting away against economic uncertainty.

Whether you’re flying or planning a road trip, Americans are looking for more value for their travel dollars.

“The biggest trend we’re seeing this summer is relief on airfare prices,” said Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper.com.

Domestic airfare is averaging $265 a ticket. That’s down 11% compared to last year.

An average international trip will cost $1,006.72, down 6% from a year ago.

About 43% of Americans plan to drive instead of fly this summer to save money. And the best news of all, it is not too late to find a great deal for this summer.

“There are pockets of really great deals in the U.S. and abroad. Internationally, it’s destinations like Dublin, Ireland and Barcelona that offer the best deals. And domestically, we are still seeing prices under $150 round trip to destinations like Orlando, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles,” Berg said.

Being flexible with your dates and destination is the best way to get a deal.

“We are seeing travelers looking at a lot of different options and then choosing the one that’s most affordable, most accessible for them,” Berg said. “One way to save on your hotel is to avoid Friday and Saturday nights and shift your dates to mid-week, you could save 25% on average.”

Berg also said to avoid big cities.

“Try to visit destinations off the beaten path. Head to a city outside of Paris or outside of Rome, you’ll find lower prices for accommodations, lower food prices, probably smaller crowds,” Berg added.
