Microsoft is expanding its Copilot+ PC lineup with a new addition aimed at mobile professionals. It joins the updated Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, both of which are now available for purchase as of today.

Microsoft approached the Surface Laptop 5G as a clean-slate design. It includes a six-antenna system that adapts to how the device is held or used. That setup helps maintain a stable connection across changing environments, whether commuting, working from a client site, or joining a video call on the go.

Unlike traditional laptops that rely solely on Wi-Fi, this device includes both NanoSIM and eSIM support, giving users flexibility in how they connect. When needed, it can also function as a mobile hotspot—helpful when no other connection is available.

Practical Design Choices

Many laptops tuck antennas near the base, which can reduce signal quality when used on a desk or lap. Microsoft repositioned the antennas higher on the device and developed a new laminate material that allows radio signals to pass through without affecting durability or design. These changes aim to make the 5G experience more seamless without increasing the device’s footprint.

Microsoft also tested the laptop in real-world environments—including homes, offices, and travel settings—to evaluate how connectivity performs in common use cases. This kind of testing helps ensure the device can support everyday workflows without interruption.

AI On-Device, Not Just in the Cloud

The Surface Laptop 5G features Intel Core Ultra processors and a built-in Neural Processing Unit capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. This hardware enables AI-powered tasks like transcription, noise reduction, and summarization to run locally—reducing latency and maintaining productivity even in low-bandwidth situations.

For organizations using Microsoft 365 Copilot, this means employees can take advantage of AI tools without relying solely on cloud connectivity. The local processing also adds a layer of privacy, since some tasks can be handled directly on the device.

IT Considerations and Security

From an IT perspective, the Surface Laptop 5G fits into Microsoft’s broader management ecosystem. It works with Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune, supporting zero-touch provisioning and remote configuration of eSIM profiles. This allows devices to be shipped directly to users, fully set up and ready to go.

Admins can monitor compliance and health through the Surface Management Portal in Intune. With Security Copilot now integrated, the platform provides AI-driven insights to help detect and respond to threats more quickly.

For teams working in public or shared spaces, Microsoft also offers a PanzerGlass privacy screen—sold separately—to help reduce the risk of visual data exposure.
