Tech expert calls the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller “a cash grab” due to some potentially fatal flaws
YouTuber and tech expert iFixit has given a rather damning review of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, calling it “piss poor” due to how difficult it is to repair and its high cost. The teardown starts with an instant disappointment, as Nintendo hid screws under the faceplate, but putting the controller back together will mean getting your own glue. The thumbsticks (which notoriously have a chance of drifting) need an “uncomfortable” amount of pressure to remove, suggesting they weren’t meant to be replaced. The battery seems to be the big problem, though, as a full disassembly is required to even see it.
Ever since the Nintendo Switch 2 was first announced, it’s fair to say that many fans didn’t think much of the new console. There were worries about its durability, price point, and lack of innovation to start with, but now the Switch 2 is out, we can all agree that it’s a massive step up from its predecessor, even if it’s mostly iterative.

It’s not just the Switch 2 itself that’s been getting good reviews, though, as pretty much every bit of kit that’s released alongside it (aside from the blurry camera) has also seen some good buzz. Well, it seems that’s not universal at all, as one YouTuber and tech expert has shared a damning review of the controller.
iFixit calls out the Switch 2 Pro Controller due to how hard it is to repair
“The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller makes promises it can’t keep”
As pointed out by NintendoSoup, tech expert iFixit, who is known for sharing teardowns and repair videos for the latest tech, recently shared a review for the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. While most of the reviews for the controller have been positive, iFixit really isn’t a fan due to a number of issues.
The teardown starts with an instant disappointment, as Nintendo hid screws under the faceplate, but putting the controller back together will mean getting your own glue. Although removing the faceplate reveals screws that hint at things being easy, iFixit says that there’s another “unnecessarily fiddly” layer and some wedged plastic making things tough.
To make matters worse for anyone hoping to repair the Pro Controller, iFixit says that the thumbsticks (which notoriously have a chance of drifting) need an “uncomfortable” amount of pressure to remove, suggesting they weren’t meant to be replaced. The battery seems to be the big problem, though, as iFixit notes that a full disassembly is required to even see it.
I reviewed the Switch 2 Pro Controller myself and think it’s a fantastic device, but this teardown does suggest it’s going to be a massive pain to repair.
All of these problems and many more resulted in iFixit being understandably negative about the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and suggesting that its design makes it very difficult to repair. From the looks of it, you’re much better off just buying a new one instead of fixing what you’ve got, which makes the negative review make a lot of sense.
