Get swinging: Young golfers take lead at Three Sticks through free play program
Three Sticks Golf Club is starting its third season as a provider for Youth on Course. “I just like how sort of simple it is,” Werling said. “Let’s face it, for a lot of these families, there’s no way they could afford to pay the fees that are charged for junior golf normally,” he added. “We have improved the trash in this state by 1,000% out of 10-year-old boys,” Murphy said.”By the end of the summer, they had it going with everybody,” he said of young people. “And, I mean, he wanted to get there as soon as possible,” Murphy added of Werling. “It’s really sparked a love of golf in [Greyson],” Whitney said. ‘It’s not a big deal, it’s just a way of life,’ Murphy added. ‘We have to live with it. We have to get used to it,’ he said, “and we have to deal with it.”
The program aims to make golf more accessible and affordable for young people, with over 1,000 rounds played by Youth on Course members at Three Sticks last year.
The club offers a club rental system in which kids can purchase clubs at a reduced price and exchange them as they grow.
Three Sticks Golf Club is adding a mini golf course and new tee boxes to further enhance the golfing experience for young players.
Dozens flocked to the tee boxes at Three Sticks Golf Club in Marion as it opened to the public earlier this month. Among those teeing up, regular golfers may notice some slightly shorter competitors.
Three Sticks Golf Club is starting its third season as a provider for Youth on Course, a program that allows golfers ages 6-18 to play at a reduced cost. For some golf clubs, that means youth can play for $5 or less, but at Three Sticks Golf Club, the entry is free.
“Let’s face it, for a lot of these families, hands down, a lot of these families, there’s no way they could afford to pay the fees that are charged for junior golf normally,” Mary Murphy, general manager of Three Sticks Golf Club, said.
Youth on Course members played more than 1,000 rounds at Three Sticks Golf Club last year. Marion had the highest number of Youth on Course rounds in Ohio, and this year is being spotlighted by Youth on Course nationally.
This year, Murphy hopes to double that number.
Youth on Course is a nonprofit organization that partners with golf clubs across the country to provide more access to golf. Players pay $40 a year to the Ohio Golf Association and get unlimited entry at Three Sticks Golf Club.
Three Sticks Golf Club didn’t stop at providing free entry.
The club has a rental system of sorts to help circumvent some of the costs of buying clubs for youth. When a child enters the program he or she is measured for clubs and buy them for $70, a fraction of the retail cost. Once the child grows out of them, they can exchange the clubs for the next set for $20.
Youth on Course expands golfing access in Marion
One of the golfers on the green this year will be Greyson Werling, who is starting his third season with Youth on Course. Before becoming a member, Werling, 13, had only played a few rounds. By the end of last year, he was hooked.
“I just like how sort of simple it is,” Werling said, “and like how golfing is easy for almost everyone if you can do it, and it is easy to learn, because just try to make it in a hole basically, and swing the club.”
Between Youth on Course and his middle school golf team Werling played around 40 times last year.
His mother, Whitney Werling, said being able to afford Greyson and his brother’s golfing without the program wouldn’t have been feasible.
“It’s really sparked a love of golf in [Greyson],” Whitney said. “And, I mean, he saw the sign that [Three Sticks Golf Club] was opening March 1, and he wanted to get there as soon as possible.”
While teaching young golfers the game, Murphy said she’s found golf can bring students together. One summer she saw groups of younger golfers playing with their friends from school, largely ignoring each other. But just a few months later, their competitive sides took over.
“By the end of the summer, they had it going with everybody,” Murphy said. “We have improved the trash talking in this state by 1,000% out of 10-year-old boys.”
Improvements coming to Three Sticks Golf Club
Three Sticks Golf Club is looking to make some changes this year. In the next few weeks the club will break ground on a new irrigation system. After the droughts last year, Murphy hopes the irrigation system will help the club stay in good condition for the coming years.
The club also will add a minigolf course on its driving range. It’ll have six holes with the longest one being 50 yards. Once a week, the club will close the range to allow junior team members access on their own.
“If you make a par, it’s a big deal,” Murphy said. “… This gets kids not afraid of doing that.”
The mini golf course likely will be open around mid-summer. Another advantage for youth golfers will be new tee boxes Three Sticks is putting up to help younger golfers.
WHAT’S BREWING: Cozy cup lattes to Avocado Toast, Remnant’s journey has been flavorful
The Remnant Tea & Coffee opened in downtown Marion in 2021. The coffee shop’s signature drink is the cozy cup latte. The shop also offers a variety of sandwiches and other food items. The Remnant is located at 187 W. Center St., Marion, Ohio, 515-547-5100. For more information on The Remant, go to the shop’s website or Facebook page. The Marion Star will feature good eats, whether from a restaurant, a store, a food truck or elsewhere, twice a month on CNN.com/Heroes. The next episode of What’s Cooking is Wednesday, January 23. For the next installment, check out Thursday, January 24, at 8 p.m. and 10 a.m., and Sunday, January 25, at 9 p.M. and 11 a.M., respectively, for the next two weeks of CNN’s “Heroes in the City” series. The series is presented by CNN iReport, which also airs on PBS stations in the U.S.
In addition to coffee and tea, the shop offers a variety of unique sandwiches and other food items.
The Remnant has become a community gathering place since it opened in 2021.
Editor’s note: On two Wednesdays each month online The Marion Star will feature good eats, whether from a restaurant, a store, a food truck or elsewhere. Check back each week to see 🍵☕ What’s Cooking, or in this case, What’s Brewing.
Tucked away on the left side of Charleston Place is one of downtown Marion’s staple coffee shops: The Remnant Tea & Coffee.
The rich aroma of coffee meets customers just as they open the door. The space has ample seating with nooks for community members to meet with friends. Upstairs is a lofted space that overlooks the rest of the cafe. But of course, the main attraction is The Remnant’s coffee and tea menu.
Abigail Jordan, co-owner of The Remnant along with her mother and sister, said the shop offers everything from coffee and tea to lemonade, boba, fresh juices and more.
“We try to cater to everybody,” Jordan said. “So I don’t think somebody can walk in and not like anything on the menu.”

The Remnant just finalized its signature drink − the cozy cup latte. Jordan said they hoped to create a drink that reminded customers of the atmosphere The Remnant has cultivated. The latte has caramel, toasted marshmallow, white mocha and whipped cream.
“You taste it and it’s like a little warm hug,” Jordan said.
More to The Remant than beverages – ‘weird sandwiches’ are a hit
But the cafe also features more than just drinks.
“It’s funny, people come in for the coffee,” Jordan said, “but like our our biggest hits are some of our weird sandwiches. So my mom is one of those weird people that likes to explore and create. She’s our creative person. She comes up with the plans, and then we try to execute them.”
One of the most popular food items on the menu is Avocado Toast. The toast is made with sourdough bread and uses cream cheese as a base. Then, an entire avocado is sliced with everything seasoning sprinkled on top.
Grace Owings, a regular at The Remnant, said the cream cheese on the avocado toast was new to her when she first tried it.
“The cream cheese makes the biggest difference,” Owings said. “I never knew that you could just put cream cheese on avocado toast.”
Another favorite is the Sweet Bacon sandwich made starting with sourdough bread topped with bacon, white cheddar cheese and fig jam.
“It’s just like that weird charcuterie kind of flavor and people really like that,” Jordan said.
The Remnant hopes to foster a community-centered atmosphere
The Remnant opened in 2021 with the goal of bringing people together after the pandemic. Jordan said the timing of the shop’s opening helped it stay in business.
“I think coming out of COVID was what made us different than the other coffee shops,” Jordan said, “because people had a hunger for keeping that community alive, because we’ve gone a year without it, and so they were desperate for keeping something like that alive.”
Preston Nagel has been a regular since the coffee shop opened. While he loves the shop’s Reese’s blended, what keeps him coming back is The Remnant’s atmosphere.
“I like the people that work here,” Nagel said. “[They’re] really friendly when I come in. Same thing, my wife and I’ve been coming here ever since open. We come here a couple times a week.”
The shop’s first location was smaller and didn’t quite work for The Remnant’s growing number of regulars. After two years, The Remnant moved to its current home in Charleston Place, a much bigger space. Despite the change in location, Jordan said one thing will always stay the same, and that’s the shop’s focus on its customers.
“They just love talking to us,” Jordan said. “We love talking to them. We’re only here for the customers. Coffee, yeah, it’s a side effect, but we’re here to create relationships with the customers.”
The Remnant is located at 187 W. Center St., Marion. Hours are 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. The Remnant is closed Sunday and Monday.

Dr. David “Dave” Krigbaum Obituary
David was born in Columbus, OH, on March 15, 1933, to H.A. “Krig” and Mary Angela “Tompie’ Krigbaum. He died in Phoenix on March 29, 2025. A celebration of life will be held at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Pinetop, AZ, on Saturday, June 21st at 10 a.m.Memorial donations may be made to Blue Ridge Elementary School, TRACKS (trackswhitemountains.org), or White Mountain Nature Center (wmnature.org)
He lived a life of 92 years that included a childhood enjoyed with his seven siblings in Marion, OH. Following graduation from St. Mary High School in Marion, he attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN, on a football scholarship. Medical school at Ohio State University, an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, a pediatric residency in Columbus, and Naval service at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station came next. Returning to Phoenix, David started his 30-year pediatric practice. A mutual family friend introduced David to Lynn, a fellow Marionite in 1965. A hiking trip to Havasupai sealed the deal—they were married a year later. David and Lynn settled into life in Phoenix with their four children. Retirement in Pinetop, AZ, was filled with volunteering, golfing, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
David had a genuine interest in people of all ages. Asking questions of those he knew and those he didn’t was one of his specialties. He was quick to laughter, and dedicated to family, friends, and his Catholic faith. David always kept his word. He placed great importance on working hard, tending to value relationships, and staying active.
David is survived by his wife and buddy of 58 years, Lynn (Greetham) Krigbaum, their children, Michael (Carrie) Krigbaum, Mary (Andy Tafoya) Krigbaum, Timothy Krigbaum, and Henry (Shannon Lundy) Krigbaum, and ten grandchildren. Also surviving are four siblings, Tuggie (Larry) Ryan, Hank (Angel) Krigbaum, Joe (Karen) Krigbaum, and Janie (Jim) Epstein; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jimmy and Barb Greetham. Many nieces and nephews survive as well.
David was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin Krigbaum, and two sisters, Angel Sullivan and Lucille “Snooky” Smith.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Pinetop, AZ, on Saturday, June 21st at 10 a.m.
