Nothing beats a summer night around a fire with a full moon shining overhead.

Those looking to plan their next outing to coincide with such an occurrence will want to mark Thursday, July 10 on the calendar. On that evening the Thunder Moon will be visible among the stars.

Although the rise of the Thunder Moon sounds like an ominous celestial event, in reality it is simply the first full moon of the astronomical summer.

The full moon earned this unique name from the frequent thunderstorms that rumble across North America over the course of the month, according to AccuWeather experts.

The Thunder Moon is also known as the Buck Moon, as Buck antlers rapidly grow during this time of year and can easily be seen in full velvet by July, as explained by the Farmers’ Almanac.

AccuWeather previously reported that the Thunder Moon will rise in the southeastern sky. It will glow through the night before eventually setting in the southwest.

While the sight of the Thunder Moon will be one to behold, there will be other opportunities for stargazers to enjoy the sky throughout July.

Two coinciding meteor showers and a view of the Milky Way are among the reported sights to catch before the end of the month.
