Padilla, who is Hispanic, talked about Cinco de Mayo at the news conference in which he appears monthly with city manager Robert Perez, who is also Hispanic.

Mayor thinks Topekans generally embrace event
Topeka retailers have historically recognized May 5 as being important to some of the city’s population, Padilla said.
“For the most part, I think Topeka embraces that day,” he said. “It’s something to celebrate just if you want to get together with friends and family.”
Padilla encouraged Topeka residents to make it a point to spend some time on Cinco de Mayo at local businesses.
He noted that a Cinco de Mayo Market would be offered May 3 and 4 at the West Ridge Mall, 1801 S.W. Wanamaker Road.
The lone Fiesta Topeka queen candidate, Milagro Alvarado, will kick off Mexican food sales May 5 at Marlo Cuevas-Balandran Activity Center, 224 N.E. Chandler. Alvarado and her supporters will then sell food from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at that site every other week.
Chipotle, which has a Topeka location at 2040 S.W. Wanamaker Road, on May 5 will launch a Roblox gaming experience that will give the public a chance to win free food.
Who’s offering margarita deals?
May 5 margarita deals have been advertised on Facebook by the following Topeka restaurants:
• El Ranchito, which has sites at 2800 S.W. Fairlawn Road, 3425 S. Kansas Ave., Auburn, Holton and Osage City, will celebrate with 10% off food from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily on May 3, 4 and 5. Eighteen-ounce lime margaritas will cost $6.99, buckets of domestic beer $15.99 and lime margarita pitchers $22.99, with house tequila shots costing $2.99 and premium tequila shots costing $4.99. The Fairlawn location will feature music from Mariachi Habanero from 6 to 7 p.m. and patrones de la cima from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 5. Patrones de la cima will play from 6 to 7 p.m. and Mariachi Habanero from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. that day at the Kansas Avenue location. The Auburn, Holton and Osage City locations will offer Karaoke from 6 to 9 p.m. May 5.
• 785 Beer Company on May 5 will offer $5 margaritas of any flavor, as well as $13 Elota pizzas, $7 queso chorizo, $6 walking tacos, $5 Cantina Driveway beers and $2 hard or soft tacos.
• Happy Basset Barrel House, 510 S.W. 49th, on May 5 will offer $5 margaritas of any flavor, as well as $1 off 13-ounce and 16-ounce drafts of Happy Basset craft beers.

The second Dutch Bros location in Topeka is set to open its doors. Here’s when
Dutch Bros will open at 3200 SW Topeka Blvd. on May 19. The new location will offer $3 medium drinks on opening day. Drinks available will include specialty coffee, smoothies, teas, freezes, lemonade. There are currently more than 10 Dutch Bros locations in Kansas.

Dutch Bros will open at 3200 SW Topeka Blvd. on May 19, said a Dutch Bros news release. That’s the franchise’s second location in Topeka.
A city of Topeka building permit was issued on Dec. 9 for the new coffee shop, The Capital-Journal previously reported.
Day deal for drinks
The new location will offer $3 medium drinks on opening day. Drinks available will include specialty coffee, smoothies, teas, freezes, lemonade, exclusive Dutch Bros Rebel energy drinks and Nitro Cold Brew coffee.

“Dutch Bros works to create a massive difference one cup at a time through partnering with local organizations who are focused on enriching their communities,” said the release.
What will the business hours be?
The new location will be open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Andrew Derrick named 3rd Kansas women’s rowing head coach in program history
Andrew Derrick is the new head coach of the women’s rowing program at Kansas. Derrick was previously the coach at Gonzaga. He’s signed a five-year deal that takes him through the 2030 season as the third head coach in program history. He’s also won a national championship as an athlete at Washington and competed while representing the U.S. in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He also has experience as an assistant, too, at Oklahoma and UCF, and at Seattle Pacific and Central Oklahoma, where he enjoyed success as a head coach as well. He says he couldn’t be more excited to get to work with the athletes and staff at KU.
Derrick, previously the coach at Gonzaga, joins KU with the pedigree of leading his past program to four-straight West Coast Conference championships from 2021-24. He’s also a three-time coach of the year in the WCC, and he’s signed a five-year deal that takes him through the 2030 season as the third head coach in program history.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Andy, his wife Karin, and their three children, Kathryn, Josephine and Jack to the Jayhawk family,” Travis Goff, KU’s vice chancellor and athletic director, said in a release. “Andy has been entrenched in the highest levels of the rowing community for the past 25 years and has an intense passion for the sport and a deep understanding of how to build a program for sustained success. He is committed to a student-athlete’s complete development and connects with his rowers on and off the water. Andy and his family will fit perfectly into the culture of Kansas Athletics, and we can’t wait to get him here and enter an incredibly exciting new era of Kansas Rowing.”
Derrick also brings head coaching experience from Seattle Pacific and Central Oklahoma, where he enjoyed success as well. He has experience as an assistant, too, at Oklahoma and UCF. He’s also won a national championship as an athlete at Washington and competed while representing the United States.

Derrick noted he couldn’t be more excited to get to work with the athletes and staff at Kansas. He highlighted that the program will be defined by hard work. He expressed confidence in the bright future that’s ahead for the Jayhawks.
“My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Kansas Athletics and Lawrence communities,” Derrick said in the release. “We were blown away with the people we met, resources dedicated, and the care given through the process to take us from not looking, to accepting this truly amazing opportunity. In particular I’d like to thank Travis Goff, Maya Ozery, the entire search committee and the other coaches that took time to show us what an amazing place KU is.”
Derrick added, “I’d also like to thank everyone in Spokane, staff and team, that contributed to our success. It is hard to leave such great people that have been a huge part of our life the last five years.”

Pros and cons of New Orleans Pelicans adding Hunter Dickinson after 2025 NBA Draft
The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to add Hunter Dickinson on a two-way deal. Dickinson earned All-America honors at both Michigan and Kansas. Listed at 7-foot-2 and 265 pounds as a graduate center this past season, size certainly won’t be an issue for him as he looks to earn a role at the next level. He’s a scorer inside and outside who has shown the ability to step out on the outside and hit 3s offensively and hit 31.7% from behind the arc, and 69.0% from the free-throw line. He averaged 17.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game during his two years at Kansas.
The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to add Hunter Dickinson on a two-way deal following the end of the draft, according to a report from ESPN. It marks the next step in Dickinson’s journey, which began in college at Michigan with the 2020-21 season, continued at KU with the 2023-24 campaign, and now jumps ahead to the professional ranks. One of the more talked-about athletes at the college level in recent years, he’ll now have the opportunity to prove if he can stick with an NBA organization.

As mentioned, Dickinson can provide a physically imposing figure in the frontcourt for an NBA team. He also brings a wealth of experience from multiple high-major programs that carry the weight of expectations year in and year out. Becoming a professional isn’t about whether he can handle the pressure of attention, as that’s been commonplace for him.
Dickinson also proved himself a productive player in multiple conferences and was recognized for it. Across the past two years at Kansas, he averaged a double-double. He’s a scorer inside who has shown the ability to step out on the outside and hit 3s offensively.
Cons of New Orleans adding Hunter Dickinson after 2025 NBA Draft
Dickinson is a player who will need a quality level of spacing around him, as a lack of that at times the past two seasons at Kansas showed how that could affect the team’s potential. While he averaged more than a block per game with the Jayhawks and close to a steal per game, too, playing against another big-man with the ability to make plays on the perimeter — or someone he’s switched onto in that area of the court — could prove to be a challenge depending on the opponent. And while he was a better free-throw shooter at KU from one year to the next, he dipped in 3-point production.

Dickinson played in 67 games, starting each one, during his two years at Kansas after transferring from Michigan. Across those two seasons, he averaged 17.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. He also shot 53.7% from the field, 31.7% from behind the arc, and 69.0% from the free-throw line.

Ashley Loewen, who is co-owner of 785 Beer Co., said the restaurant will also offer a three-course meal from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. to treat mom to a special dining experience. The dinner will include a choice of house or Caesar salad and a choice of entree options fried gnocchi with chicken in creamy white sauce or baked ziti with Italian sausage.

Blue Moose, 3030 S.W. Wanamaker Road, will host a Mother’s Day brunch buffet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Admission prices will be $35 for adults, $29 for seniors (65 and older) and $15 for children ages 4 to 13. Children 3 younger will be free, said the Blue Moose website.
