2007 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow, Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff and former NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski were among those on hand for the “Economic Relationships in Sports” forum.
Tebow shared his take on how sports is a uniting factor.
“For me, the goal of wanting to get involved with the teams isn’t just for the wins and losses, even though we love winning and hate losing even more, so we should be very clear about that,” he said. “Yes, we like winning, but you also see what sports can do. You see what impact sports can have. You can see it in your community, you can see it in relationships, you can see it in families. It’s something that’s contagious and special.”
Tebow also highlighted the positive impact sports can have on a child’s life.
“(I’m) fortunate to have served in a lot of places around the world, and I’ve seen what it can do, taking kids away from maybe the option of being on a gang, but they get to be on a soccer team,” he said. “Or someone has a role model, someone that’s a female soccer player, and they think ‘Oh, because we have a soccer team now in Jacksonville, I get someone now who I get to look up to every single day.’ And that can transform a community. We need role models, and we need to have something to be able to look up to and look forward to, and be a part of.”
Tebow said a sports team’s success in big games can play a big role in revitalizing communities.
“I think I probably first learned about this from ‘Ted Lasso,’ but I do think that hope is incredible, and I think that’s one of the things that fans rally around,” he said. “Look at what happens when we get March Madness and all of these teams show up. Who do people root for? The No. 1 seed? Heck no. People are rooting for the 16 seed to upset No. 1, and people want to see upsets. Nobody’s like ‘Remember when that No. 1 seed ran the table?’ Nobody remembers or cares. I mean, we remember this year because Florida won the national title.”
The symposium kicked off the school’s “Business of Sports” event series, which will continue Oct. 1 when Wojnarowski, who now , will return to discuss the economic landscape of college sports. Further details have not yet been released.
