Checked bags are obviously quite large since the whole point is to have a lot of packing space inside. That’s why built-in organizational features can be useful, like pockets or dividers. Look at photos of the interiors of the suitcases to see the design configuration. Some suitcases have tons of pockets, while others don’t have many at all. Softside suitcases almost always have exterior pockets as well. Some suitcases have compression boards or dividers inside that you can use to press down your clothing and buckle it in place. It’s becoming more common for suitcases to include removable packing cubes, laundry bags, or shoe bags, which is always a nice bonus.

Both styles are durable—but in different ways. Softside suitcases won’t get dented or scratched as easily, but they can get stained or even tear if they get caught the wrong way on a luggage belt (not common, but it’s possible). Hardside luggage may get scratched or dented more easily. The important thing is to look for reliable brands and strong materials either way.

The design of the two styles tends to be a bit different: softsides almost always have exterior pockets, while it’s more rare to find that in a hardside suitcase, especially in a checked size. Hardside bags usually open like a clamshell with a 50/50 split, while softsides are more often designed with one big interior compartment with a lid.

A big deciding factor in buying luggage is whether you want hardside or softside. That refers to the material on the outer shell of the suitcase, but it’s also a style choice. I personally prefer softside luggage because the material has some give to it, so I can always pack it to the brim and even stuff in a few extra items—although you can always buy an expandable suitcase to add extra packing space on a hardside suitcase as well.

When choosing a suitcase size, think about how long you typically travel for, how much space you need, and whether or not you’ll need to fit your bag into public spaces like trains or buses. We’ve listed the dimensions and weights for each suitcase in our list so you can compare them.

That being said, checked suitcases come in many different sizes. A medium checked bag averages 26-28 inches tall and would be sufficient for a weeklong trip or shorter, while a large checked bag would be about 30-32 inches tall—better suited for trips that are longer than a week (or heavy packers). Travel trunks are designed a little differently; they are usually a little taller and wider, with deeper compartments that work well for bulky items or stacking packing cubes.

Anything that is too large to be a carry-on suitcase would be considered a checked suitcase, as long as it’s not too large. Most airlines will limit checked luggage to 62 linear inches (the sum of the height, width, and depth of the luggage). Weight is even more important , as most airlines have luggage weight restrictions of 50 pounds or occasionally 70 pounds for frequent flyers with elite status. Always check baggage restrictions with your airline before your flight.

After testing each item in our lab, we long-term test all bags on real-world travels for a minimum of six months to see how they hold up when we check them on real flights. We will continue to update the article as we test new luggage pieces and collect additional insights.

Finally, our durability tests: we shove each suitcase off a countertop multiple times and hit it with a metal baseball bat, checking the bag for scuffs, dents, tears, and other types of damage. We make sure the wheels and handles still work after the drops.

We follow a detailed luggage testing process that analyzes capacity, organization, maneuverability, durability, and value of each suitcase. We test bags from as many luggage brands as we can find, and we’re constantly testing new releases and retesting old favorites. Testing begins in the T+L lab, where we weigh the empty suitcases, and pack the luggage with standard items for a seven-day trip, including a full wardrobe, two pairs of shoes, and two toiletry bags.
