Travel ban has some in Rochester immigrant community on edge
President Donald Trump’s new travel ban took effect just after midnight Monday. 12 countries including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen are affected. This motion comes after a terror attack in Colorado by an Egyptian national, although Egypt is not on the list. There are exemptions the ban will not apply to: lawful permanent US residents, their immediate family members who hold visas, adoptions, those fleeing persecution in Iran, athletes and other areas of flexibility.“It affect a lot of the whole community as a whole,” said Edaire Louis of the on West Main Street.
“I know that in our congregation, we have many people from many countries who will be affected,” said Tabassam Javid with the .
Javid said summer travel plans could face some turbulence for some in his congregation.
“(Those overseas) come and unite with the family here in America. So that is one fear a lot of people have,” he said. “The second part of the ban also where the visas that were granted were going to be cancelled. Now that is going to have a very drastic effect on this whole thing.”
Javid is afraid some visas could be revoked after travel plans have already been made.
But there are exemptions the This ban will not apply to: lawful permanent US residents, their immediate family members who hold visas, adoptions, those fleeing persecution in Iran, athletes and other areas of flexibility.
“I really think the exemptions are good, because when it was across the board, it was really a very cruel stroke,” he said.
In other words, better than the last time Trump took this action during his last term. That ban focused primarily on Muslim-majority nations.
This time around, though, the scope is wider.
“It affect a lot of the whole community as a whole,” said Edaire Louis of the on West Main Street.
Louis said the uncertainty of the day-to-day has many on edge. He’s trying to get family out of gang violence in Haiti to Rochester.
“It’s so bad that we don’t know what’s going to happen next,” he said.
A Rochester native, Ibrahim Hussein of the on Jefferson Road, isn’t sure yet what this could mean for the diverse number of customers who come here.
“It’s not affecting me directly. It might affect some certain people, some innocent communities,” said Hussein.
While these new restrictions might cause some unsettling feelings, Hussein says here is a place of calm and community.
“Layali Coffee House is a slice of Yemen. If anything, you know where to go,” he said. “This is a safe spot for everybody.”
