Travel warning issued for 2 Asian countries over ongoing conflict, unexploded landmine encounters
The State Department issued a pair of Level 2 travel advisories for Cambodia and Thailand. Civil unrest and an ongoing armed conflict between the countries are factors in the advisory. Americans are advised not to visit any areas within 50 kilometers of the Cambodia-Thailand border for any reason.
Travelers are being advised of an ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand that is cause for concern for Americans planning to visit soon. On Friday, the State Department issued a pair of Level 2 travel advisories for Americans planning to travel to either country.
A Level 2 travel advisory has the second lowest risk factor in the agency’s four-tier scale. A Level 2 advisory calls for travelers to “exercise increased caution” when visiting the country in question.
While Americans are not being discouraged from visiting either country, the armed conflict was cited by U.S. officials in the advisories. Americans are advised not to visit any areas within 50 kilometers of the Cambodia-Thailand border for any reason. The U.S. government says it has limited abilities to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in those areas.
The advisory for Cambodia also warned of travelers potentially encountering unexploded landmines in remote areas. Visitors are advised not to touch any unknown metal objects they encounter while in Cambodia. Reports of robberies are also a cause for concern, according to U.S. officials.
