WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Tropical storm warnings have been issued across several counties in the Cape Fear Region as Tropical Storm Chantal approaches the South Carolina coast.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued tropical storm warnings for coastal New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties.

NWS says the storm will bring threats of gusty winds, heavy rainfall and localized storm surges.

The specific locations under tropical storm warnings are:

Holden Beach

Calabash

Southport

Carolina Beach

Wrightsville Beach

Surf City

Hampstead

According to NWS, winds in Brunswick County are expected to range from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Winds in New Hanover County are forecasted to be between 15 and 25 mph, while in Pender County, they are expected to be between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

NWS states a localized storm surge of up to two feet is possible, with the most vulnerable locations being low-lying coastal and beachfront communities.

Officials say drivers should expect road closures, be alert to ponding and avoid crossing flooded roadways.

Although the threat is small, isolated tornadoes are a possibility. Residents are advised to stay alert and be prepared to find shelter if a tornado warning is issued.

Officials also ask residents to secure loose items and prepare boats as well as docks for higher than normal tides.
