Trump claimed truce credit 25 times, but PM Modi is still silent: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi questions Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over US President Donald Trump’s claims about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Gandhi also slammed the large-scale voter roll revision in Bihar that rocked the first three days of the Monsoon Session. The Congress MP also questioned India’s foreign policy standing post-Operation Sindoor, alleging that no country had supported India diplomatically. Gandhi repeated his earlier claim of the BJP having manipulated electoral rolls to emerge victorious in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan was reached after direct military-to-military communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), initiated at Pakistan’s request. The two countries reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10 days after intense cross-border escalation. The ceasefire agreement was signed in New York on May 11, and came into force on May 13. The deal was signed at the request of the Pakistani government.

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday went all-out in a fresh attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He also slammed the large-scale voter roll revision in Bihar that rocked the first three days of the Monsoon Session, and alleged a broader pattern of electoral fraud by the BJP in multiple states.

Gandhi said that Trump has made the claim “25 times”, yet the Indian Prime Minister has remained silent, triggering serious questions about the government’s narrative.

“Trump has said 25 times that he got the ceasefire done. Who is Trump to get a ceasefire done? It’s not his job. But the Prime Minister has not given a reply even once. That is the truth, and he cannot hide from it,” Gandhi told reporters at Parliament.

Mocking the government’s portrayal of Operation Sindoor as a success, Gandhi pointed out the apparent contradictions in the official messaging.

“On one hand you say Operation Sindoor is ongoing, and on the other, you say victory has been achieved. Either it’s ongoing, or it’s over. Trump is saying he halted Sindoor. So ‘kuch toh daal mein kala hai na’,” he said, using a popular Hindi idiom implying something is fishy.

The Congress MP also questioned India’s foreign policy standing post-Operation Sindoor, alleging that no country had supported India diplomatically.

“They have destroyed our foreign policy. No one supported us,” he said, accusing the government of isolating India on the global stage.

Rahul Gandhi further suggested that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding Parliament precisely because of Trump’s claim. “How can the Prime Minister give a statement? What will he say – that Trump got the ceasefire done? He can’t say that. But that’s the truth, and the whole world knows it,” Gandhi remarked.

On the Election Commission flagging 52 lakh missing voters in Bihar, Gandhi repeated his earlier claim of the BJP having manipulated electoral rolls to emerge victorious in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections.

“It is not just about those 52 lakh people. They have cheated in Maharashtra (Assembly elections). We asked the ECI to show the voter’s list, but they refused. We asked them to show videography, but they changed the rules of videography. 1 crore new voters were added in Maharashtra. In Karnataka, we have caught a huge theft. I will show it to the Election Commission in black and white on how theft is done. They have understood that we are aware of their game now. Now, what they are doing is that they have deleted the voters, and a new voter list will be brought,” he said.

TRUMP REPEATS CEASEFIRE CLAIM

The Congress party echoed Gandhi’s sentiments, with senior leader Jairam Ramesh accusing Modi of refusing to engage on critical matters.

“As Trump hits the silver jubilee mark with his ceasefire claim, the Prime Minister remains totally quiet – only finding time to travel abroad and destabilise democratic institutions at home,” Ramesh said in a sharp post on X.

Trump, speaking again on Wednesday at a gathering in New York, reiterated his earlier assertion that he had prevented a major war between India and Pakistan.

“I stopped it. Five planes were shot down. It was going to be a big problem. I’m the one who called them and said: Stop,” Trump said.

India, however, has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan was reached after direct military-to-military communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), initiated at Pakistan’s request. During a call with Trump last month, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India “does not and will never accept mediation”.

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India’s military response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead. The operation involved high-precision drone and missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The two countries reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10 after days of intense cross-border escalation.
