Travel volumes have been high for several weeks as summer vacations begin, and air passenger numbers reached a record this past weekend.

On June 22, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) broke its record for the most people screened on a single day, with nearly 3.1 million individuals passing through airport security lines.

“On our busiest days, our officers remain laser-focused on delivering a safe and efficient screening experience to all passengers traveling through our airports,” TSA Illinois Federal Security Director Jim Spriggs commented in a press release on June 24, 2025.

“We appreciate those who arrive at the checkpoint prepared with REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID, and with no prohibited items in their carry-on bags.”

TSA Security measures begin long before you arrive at the airport and continue until you arrive at your destination.

The good news from TSA is that they are well prepared to meet the needs during the summer holidays.

TSA is staffed and ready to screen more than 18.5 million travelers at the nation’s airport security checkpoints during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. This year’s projection says the highest passenger volume, approximately 2.9 million, is expected on Sunday, July 6th.

With high travel volumes expected to continue, air travelers should arrive at the airport in plenty of time to check their bags and complete security screening before proceeding to their gate, according to the TSA.

Before heading to the airport, you can reach out to TSA regarding checkpoint questions by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872) or via social media through X (@AskTSA), Facebook Messenger (http://www.fb.com/AskTSA), or Apple Business Chat.

Furthermore, Passengers who need additional assistance through security screening may request a TSA Passenger Support Specialist (PSS).

A PSS is a TSO who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions, or those who need additional screening assistance.

From a health perspective, the U.S. CDC publishes various Travel Health Advisories that identify locations experiencing disease outbreaks, such as chikungunya, dengue, and malaria. Furthermore, the CDC recommends consulting with a travel vaccine expert to discuss immunization options.
