Hawaii has begun to experience multiple tsunami waves ,some exceeding five feet, but no major damage has been reported yet, Governor Josh Green said in a press briefing on Tuesday evening (local time).

“So far, we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief,” Green stated, adding that it could take another two to three hours before an official all-clear is issued. “At the moment, so good — but we don’t want anyone letting their guard down just yet.”

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid calling 911 unless in a real emergency, to keep lines open. Green confirmed there had been no power outages, and no plans to cut electricity preemptively. While airports have remained unaffected by the waves, all flights in and out of Maui have been canceled for the night, with nearly 200 people now sheltering at the airport terminal.

Describing an earlier incident on Oahu’s north shore, the governor said, “When that water receded in Haleiwa and we saw boats sitting on bare rocks and sand, that gave us pause. That doesn’t happen without something significant approaching.”

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula triggered 4-metre (13-foot) tsunami waves and sparked evacuation orders in Hawaii and across the Pacific on Wednesday.

The shallow earthquake damaged buildings and injured several people in the remote Russian region, while much of Japan’s eastern seaboard – devastated by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2011 – was ordered to evacuate.

In Hawaii, coastal residents were told to get to high ground or the fourth floor or above of buildings, and the U.S. Coast Guard ordered ships out of harbours as the tsunami approached.

“Take Action! Destructive tsunami waves expected,” the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management said on X. No major waves were seen along the western-most of the major Hawaiian islands just before sunset when the first tsunami was expected to hit, live footage showed.

After a huge magnitude 8.8 earthquake, with warnings in place around the Pacific of waves of over three metres (10 feet) in places.

Russia’s emergencies ministry said a tsunami hit and flooded the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, where the population of around 2,000 people was evacuated.

Several people were injured in Russia by the quake, state media reported, but none of them seriously.

Live footage on Japanese television showed people evacuating by car or on foot to higher ground, including the northern island of Hokkaido, where the first wave, measuring 30 centimetres (one foot) was observed.

Wednesday’s quake was the strongest since 1952 in Russia’s Kamchatka region, the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake is roughly the same as the massive 9.0 temblor that year which resulted in a destructive, Pacific-wide tsunami, according to the USGS.

At least six aftershocks have further rattled the region, including one of 6.9 magnitude and another listed at 6.3.

Japanese broadcaster NHK switched to special coverage, with presenters telling people on the coast to “please evacuate immediately”.

A tsunami wave of about 30 centimetres (about 1 foot) also reached Nemuro on the eastern coast of Hokkaido, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Trenours also set off a tsunami in the northern Pacific region and prompted warnings for coastal areas of Alaska, Hawaii, Chile, the Solomon Islands and south toward New Zealand. Waves of more than 3 meters (yards) were possible along some coastal areas of Ecuador.

The quake was about 119 kilometers (74 miles) away from the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000, on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
