TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Beginning in October, the Tyler Fire Department will offer annual inspections of businesses.

The department says the program is part of its commitment to keeping employees, customers and emergency responders safe.

The initiative will include routine inspections for fire safety, structural integrity and public health compliance while identifying potential hazards and improving preparedness.

“Through this program, we will partner with business owners to create safer environments across our community,” said Fire Marshal Joey Hooton. “This is about prevention and preparedness, not penalties.”

Their inspectors are certified through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and inspections will cost $50 per visit.

The fire department also said proactively assessing building conditions will help emergency responders better understand facility layouts and may help save lives in a crisis.
