As tensions in the Middle East continue, the State Department has issued another Level 4 “Do not travel” advisory for a nation in the region. On Tuesday, the agency updated guidance on visiting Lebanon and is advising Americans not to travel there.

A Level 4 advisory is the highest on the State Department’s four-tier scale.

The advisory was issued two days after the Department of State ordered the departure of family members and non-emergency U.S. government personnel from Lebanon. The agency cited “the volatile and unpredictable security situation in the region” as the reason for removing those people from the country.

As for travelers to Lebanon, the State Department says crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, unexploded landmines, and the risk of armed conflict are all reasons to avoid visiting the country. Earlier this week the State Department issued a blanket travel advisory for Americans traveling abroad, advising them to use extra caution when outside the U.S.

That warning comes as Israel and Iran have each attacked the other in recent weeks. While Lebanon does not share an official border with Israel, the two countries are separated by a demarcation line approved by the United Nations.

Ongoing violence in Lebanon and the region poses the biggest threat to Americans visiting the country. The advisory states that “The Lebanese government cannot guarantee the safety of U.S. citizens against sudden outbreaks of violence and armed conflict.”

The warning goes on to say that if Americans find themselves in danger in Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy might not be able to help. Flights in and out of Lebanon have also been reduced, making it harder for people to leave in a quick manner.

“U.S. citizens in Lebanon should be aware that consular officers from the U.S. Embassy are not always able to travel to assist them. The Department of State considers the threat to U.S. government personnel in Beirut serious enough to require them to live and work under strict security,” reads a portion of the advisory.
