Britain informed ahead of Iran strikes but not asked to provide Diego Garcia base
Britain was informed of the US military strikes on Iran ahead of time, but did not receive any US request for their shared Diego Garcia air base to be used, senior minister Jonathan Reynolds said on Sunday. US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had “obliterated” Iran’s primary nuclear facilities in overnight strikes. Tehran has vowed to respond with all available means to the US attack, and has accused the U.S. of sabotaging diplomacy after talks with European powers. The UK government is in ”active conversations’ about chartering aircraft to get people out of the region within ”hours, not days”, pending the possible reopening of Israeli airspace. The foreign ministry said it was preparing for a charter flight ”early next week’

Britain was given advance notice of the United States’ military strikes on Iran but was not asked to allow the use of their jointly operated Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean, UK minister Jonathan Reynolds said on Sunday.
US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had “obliterated” Iran’s primary nuclear facilities in overnight strikes, marking a significant escalation in Middle East tensions. Tehran has vowed to respond with all available means.

Reynolds clarified that the UK did not participate in the strikes but had previously deployed military assets to the region. He emphasised that Britain would take “all action necessary” to defend its key allies if threatened. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he added, was in ongoing communication with Britain’s international partners throughout Sunday.
”I know often because of British military assets, RAF Akrotiri (in Cyprus) or Diego Garcia, sometimes that request is made. And this was not a situation where that request was made,” Reynolds, the business and trade minister, told Sky News.
Diego Garcia is a strategically important UK-U.S. military base located in the Chagos Islands.
Reynolds said Britain knew about the strike in advance.
”I can’t tell you exactly when we did know, but we were informed, as you might expect,” he said.
Reynolds said that the government was in ”active conversations” about chartering aircraft to get people out of the region within ”hours, not days”, pending the possible reopening of Israeli airspace.
Britain’s foreign ministry said it was preparing for a charter flight ”early next week”, adding that British nationals and their dependants in Israel and the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories who were interested should register their details.

Trump’s intervention – despite his past pledges to avoid another “forever war” – threatens to dramatically widen the conflict, after Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign on Iran last week, with Tehran vowing to retaliate if Washington joined in.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of sabotaging diplomacy after talks with European powers.
“This week, we held talks with the E3/EU when the US decided to blow up that diplomacy,” he wrote on X.
Aragchi later told reporters in Istanbul the United States and Israel had “crossed a very big red line”, asserting Iran would continue to defend itself “by all means necessary”.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the US strikes, saying Trump’s decision to “target Iran’s nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history”.
In response to the US attack, Iran’s armed forces said they targeted multiple sites in Israel including Ben Gurion airport, the country’s main international gateway near Tel Aviv.

Starmer warns of ‘risk of escalation’ following US strikes against Iran
The Prime Minister urged all sides to return to negotiations but said he had taken “all necessary measures” to protect British interests in the region if the conflict escalates. There was no British involvement in the action but the Government was informed before the US strikes. Mr Trump has warned of further US action if necessary, saying: “There will either be peace or there will be tragedy for Iran’s nuclear programme” The action comes just days after Sir Keir, who attended the G7 summit in Canada with Mr Trump, said on Tuesday there was “nothing” from the president to suggest he was about to get involved in the conflict. The Prime Minister said there was a “risk of escalation” adding: ‘That’s a risk to the region. It’S a risk beyond the region, and that’s why all our focus has been on de-escalating’ The US has taken action to alleviate the grave threat that Iran poses to global security.
There was no British involvement in the action but the Government was informed before the US strikes.
Tehran has threatened to retaliate and Mr Trump has warned of further US action if necessary, saying: “There will either be peace or there will be tragedy for Iran.”
Speaking at his Chequers country retreat, the Prime Minister said there was a “risk of escalation” adding: “That’s a risk to the region. It’s a risk beyond the region, and that’s why all our focus has been on de-escalating, getting people back around to negotiate what is a very real threat in relation to the nuclear programme.
“In relation to the UK, we were not involved in the attack. We were given due notice, as we would expect, as close allies to the US, and we have been moving assets to the region to make sure we’re in a position to protect our own interests, our personnel and our assets, and, of course, those of our allies.”
The US action comes just days after Sir Keir, who attended the G7 summit in Canada with Mr Trump, said on Tuesday there was “nothing” from the president to suggest he was about to get involved in the conflict.
Mr Trump pushed ahead with the action anyway, which he claimed had “completely and fully obliterated” key nuclear facilities.
Asked if he had been left looking foolish by the UK’s closest ally ignoring his calls for de-escalation and pushing ahead with military strikes, the Prime Minister said: “It’s clearly a fast-moving situation and there’s been a huge amount of discussion in the days since the G7 ended.”
The Prime Minister sought to dodge questions about whether the UK could get dragged into the conflict if Iran targeted the bases of the US, a Nato ally.
“I’m not going to speculate about what may happen, because all of my focus is on de-escalation,” he said.
“But I do want to reassure the public we have taken all necessary measures to protect UK interests, UK personnel and to work with our allies to protect their interests as well.”
The US has taken action to alleviate the grave threat that Iran poses to global security. The UK did not participate in these strikes. The safety of UK personnel and bases is my top priority. Force protection is at its highest level and we deployed additional jets this week. — John Healey (@JohnHealey_MP) June 22, 2025
Extra RAF Typhoon jets have already been moved to the region and Defence Secretary John Healey said “force protection is at its highest level” following the US strikes.
Sir Keir chaired a meeting of the Government’s Cobra crisis committee on Sunday afternoon and has held a series of calls with world leaders.
A joint statement from Sir Keir with France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Friedrich Merz said: “We urge Iran not to take any further action that could destabilise the region.
“We will continue our joint diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and ensure the conflict does not intensify and spread further.”
Foreign Secretary David Lammy spoke to his Iranian and Israeli counterparts “to stress the need for de-escalation”.
“I urged a diplomatic, negotiated solution to end this crisis,” he said.
The US attacked Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz which are linked to Iran’s nuclear programme.
The Tehran regime has insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful but its uranium enrichment process has gone far beyond what is required for power stations.
According to details released by the Pentagon:
– The strikes, which had the codename Operation Midnight Hammer, involved more than 125 aircraft.
– A complicated decoy operation was used, with one group of bombers flying west over the Pacific in a move widely documented on social media by aviation enthusiasts, while the “strike package” of seven B-2s secretly flew east across the Atlantic.
– During the 18-hour flight to Iran, the stealth bombers were refuelled several times then linked up with escort aircraft once over land.
– At around 2.10am in Iran the first bunker-busting massive ordnance pentrator (Mop) bombs were dropped on Fordow.
– A total of 14 Mops were dropped across two of the nuclear sites.
– No Iranian shots were fired at the bombers during the mission.
– A US submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles at Isfahan, which struck the target after the B-2 raids to maintain the element of surprise.
– The initial assessment is that “all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction”, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff General Dan Caine said.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said: “By targeting Iran’s nuclear sites, the US has taken decisive action against a regime that fuels global terror and directly threatens the UK.
“Iranian operatives have plotted murders and attacks on British soil. We should stand firmly with the US and Israel.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also backed Mr Trump’s decision to strike Iran.
He said: “Iran must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons, the future of Israel depends on it.”
Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey said “robust diplomacy” was now needed to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat, adding: “Following the US strikes, it is essential that we work to de-escalate the conflict and achieve that diplomatic solution.”
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney called for diplomacy, saying the Middle East conflict has reached “an alarmingly greater level of danger after the US attacks on Iran”.
Iran launched a ballistic missile barrage against Israel in retaliation to the US action.
The foreign ministry in Tehran issued a statement condemning “the United States’ brutal military aggression against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities”.
It added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is resolved to defend Iran’s territory, sovereignty, security and people by all force and means against the United States’ criminal aggression.”
Mr Trump said any retaliation would be met with “force far greater” than that used in the initial strikes.

“I think this is a very provocative step taken by an American president who’s supposed to be leading this world to avoid wars… I think there will be a retaliation from the Iranian side because they have the full right and the legitimacy, as per the UN Charter and international law, to retaliate against any country attacking a sovereign nation,” the West Asia expert said.
During the intervening hours of Saturday and Sunday, US and Israel targeted Iran’s nuclear sites in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. Fardow is Iran’s main enrichment location for uranium enrichment to 60 per cent.
According to a CNN report, the US likely used six B-2 bombers to drop a dozen GBU-57 A/B “bunker buster” bombs, also known as Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP), on the Fordow nuclear site, which is Iran’s main location for uranium enrichment.

Iran Israel War Live Updates: Iran-Israel conflict “closely coordinated” between Trump, Netanyahu: Former US Treasury official Iran Israel War Live Updates: The recent joint military action against Iran by the United States and Israel may have been planned well in advance, with signs of close coordination between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Jonathan Schanzer, a terror finance analyst and former US Treasury official.
Schanzer said US-Israel strikes on Iran appeared to have been closely coordinated from early in Trump’s second term, marking a potential turning point for West Asia.
“Two men (Trump and Netanyahu) have been coordinating closely. The Israelis launched their attack (on Iran) last Thursday night — they did so on Day 61 after Trump’s 60-day deadline… I get a sense that this was coordinated from very early on in the second Trump administration… This is the beginning of a different Middle East because this regime in Iran has cast a dark shadow over the entire Middle East. Since 1979, it has been the single solitary source of so much destruction and just horrific acts that have taken place across the region,” Schanzer said.
The Israel-US strikes, which hit key nuclear sites in Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow in Iran, came shortly after President Trump’s 60-day ultimatum to Iran expired.

Iran Israel War Live Updates: How Iran could retaliate after US strikes on its nuclear program Iran Israel War Live Updates: Iran has spent decades building multi-tiered military capabilities at home and across the region that were at least partly aimed at deterring the United States from attacking it. By entering Israel’s war, the U.S. may have removed the last rationale for holding them in reserve.
Thet could mean a wave of attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East, an attempt to close a key bottleneck for global oil supplies or a dash to develop a nuclear weapon with what remains of Iran’s disputed program after American strikes on three key sites.
A decision to retaliate against the U.S. and its regional allies would give Iran a far larger target bank and one that is much closer than Israel, allowing it to potentially use its missiles and drones to greater effect. The U.S. and Israel have far superior capabilities, but those haven’t always proven decisive in America’s recent history of military interventions in the region.
Ever since Israel started the war with a suprise bombardment of Iran’s military and nuclear sites on June 13, Iranian officials from the supreme leader on down have warned the U.S. to stay out, saying it would have dire consequences for the entire region.
It should soon be clear whether those were empty threats or a grim forecast.

Iran Israel War Live: Trump says US attack ‘obliterated’ Iran nuclear sites Iran Israel War Live: US President Donald Trump said air strikes on Sunday “totally obliterated” Iran’s main nuclear sites, as Washington joined Israel’s war with Tehran in a flashpoint moment for the Middle East.

The intervention by a US president who had vowed to avoid another “forever war” in the region threatens to dramatically widen the conflict, with Iran having said it would retaliate if Washington got involved.
“Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success,” said Trump, adding that they targeted the crucial underground nuclear enrichment plant of Fordo along with facilities at Natanz and Isfahan.
“Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran the bully of the Middle East must now make peace,” said Trump.
