The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that its agents “eliminated” two Russian “hitmen” in the Kyiv region Sunday morning. The statement was in response to Thursday’s broad daylight killing of SBU Colonel Ivan Voronych. The suspected killers—a man and a woman—were instructed to track VoronyCh’S movements and retrieve a silenced pistol from a stash site before carrying out the hit, the statement continued. The head of the SBU and commander of the special operation said the suspected Russian agents were “elicinated” after resisting arrest. Both Russia and Ukraine have carried out targeted killings since the war began in February 2022.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that its agents “eliminated” two Russian “hitmen” in the Kyiv region Sunday morning, in response to Thursday’s broad daylight killing of SBU Colonel Ivan Voronych.
Voronych—whose attack was captured on surveillance video—was reportedly involved in covert operations inside Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine and is believed to have played a role in organizing last year’s surprise Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.
“During a special operation, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine eliminated agents of Russian special services who, on the instructions of the FSB of the Russian Federation, carried out the murder of an SBU colonel in Kyiv,” the SBU statement read.

According to an investigation, the suspected killers—a man and a woman—were instructed to track Voronych’s movements and retrieve a silenced pistol from a stash site before carrying out the hit, the statement continued.

Vasyl Malyuk, head of the SBU and commander of the special operation, said the suspected Russian agents were “eliminated” after resisting arrest.
“The FSB agent-combat group was routed to Ukraine in advance and three days ago committed the murder of an SBU employee, our comrade Colonel Ivan Voronych,” Malyuk said in the statement. “As a result of covert investigative and active counterintelligence measures, the enemy’s lair was discovered. During the detention, they began to resist, there was a firefight, so the scoundrels were eliminated. I would like to remind you that the enemy’s only prospect on the territory of Ukraine is death!”

Malyuk also thanked the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department for its support and emphasized that countering Russian espionage remains a top SBU priority. He claimed the SBU “prevents 85% of the crimes the enemy tries to commit” within Ukraine.

Last Thursday, sources told Ukrainska Pravda that Voronych was approached by an unidentified attacker around 9 a.m. local time and was shot five times with a pistol before the suspect fled.
Surveillance footage appeared to show the colonel being ambushed outside an apartment building while walking toward a vehicle. Voronych died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, the outlet said.
Both Russia and Ukraine have carried out targeted killings since the war began in February 2022.

It said 20 of them were shot down and 20 others were jammed. The Ukrainian authorities reported that four civilians had been killed and 13 others injured in Russian attacks on the Donetsk and Kherson regions since Saturday (July 12). Volodymyr Zelensky has said over 1,800 Russian drones have been launched at Ukraine over the last seven days. He added that Moscow has also used more than 1,200 guided aerial bombs and 83 missiles of various types to attack regions across the country.
Zelensky said at Russia was intensifying terror against cities and communities to increasingly intimidate its people.

In a statement, the SBU said: “This morning, a special operation was conducted, during which members of the agent-combat group of the FSB of the Russian Federation began to resist, so they were eliminated.
“The murder of the Ukrainian defender was committed by two people – a man and a woman.
“Their supervisor ordered them to monitor the SBU officer, establish his daily schedule and routes.
“Later, the [Russian] handed over the coordinates of the cache to the killers, where there was a pistol with a silencer.”
It is understood that Voronych planned sensitive missions developed to target the Russian military and embarrass Vladimir Putin.
Sources from Putin’s ranks boasted that a Kremlin agent had assassinated the colonel for conducting secret operations from behind Russian lines.
It is believed that Putin ordered revenge hits after being embarrassed by the success of Operation Spiderweb in June, which destroyed £5.2 billion worth of Russian warplanes.

Lieutenant General and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine said: “This morning, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out the detention of an agent-combat group of the Russian FSB, who had been routed to Ukraine in advance, and three days ago committed the murder of SBU officer Colonel Ivan Voronych, our brave comrade.
“As a result of covert investigative and active counterintelligence operations, the enemy hideout was located, and this morning, active measures were taken to detain them.”
Voronych was a senior operative on the 1st Division of the 16th Directorate of the Special Operations Centre.
Former Ukrainian MP Ihor Mosiychuk said: “As a result of the shooting, the victim sustained multiple penetrating gunshot wounds and died at the scene.”
Russian news outlet Readovka said Voronych was part of a special Ukrainian secret service which had carried out operations inside Russia.
Readovka said the force “operates not only as a law enforcement entity but also takes part in highly sensitive operations on Russian territory”.
Another Russian news outlet Voenkor Kotenok TG said Voronych had “founded a division that causes problems for Russia”.

Russian authorities made no immediate public comment on Sunday’s operation.
KYIV—Ukrainian intelligence agents on Sunday killed members of a Russian secret service cell wanted on suspicion of having shot dead a colonel in Ukraine’s SBU security service last week, the SBU said.
The intelligence agency said in a statement that the operation had sought the arrest of the agents of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), who it believes were behind the killing of SBU colonel Ivan Voronych in Kyiv on Thursday.
“This morning a special operation was conducted, during which the members of the Russian FSB’s agent cell started to resist, and therefore they were liquidated,” the statement on the Telegram messaging app said.
Russian authorities made no immediate public comment on Sunday’s operation, which mirrored past assassinations of senior Russian military officials by Ukraine during the three-year-old war.
The SBU said two people—a man and a woman—were suspected of having killed Voronych. It did not say how many suspected FSB agents had been killed on Sunday.
According to the SBU, the alleged assassins were told by their handler to surveil their target and track his movements. They were eventually given the coordinates of a hiding place where they found a pistol with a suppressor, the SBU said.
It said they had tried to “lay low” after Thursday’s killing, but were tracked down by the SBU and police.
The agency’s remit covers security and counterintelligence, but since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine it has also played a prominent role in special operations against Moscow, including assassinations and sabotage attacks.
