Ukraine’s Zelensky seeks cease-fire meeting next week
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants cease-fire negotiations with Russia. He said he would be willing to meet directly and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We need to do everything possible to achieve a cease-fire,” Zelensky told Ukrainians Saturday during his daily address.

“The Russian side must stop avoiding decisions regarding prisoner exchanges, the return of children and the cessation of killings,” Zelensky said.
“A meeting at the leadership level is essential to genuinely secure peace,” he added. “Ukraine is ready for such a meeting.”
That meeting could be between Putin and Zelensky, the BBC reported.
Ukraine’s call for cease-fire negotiations comes after Russia attacked 10 Ukrainian cities and other locales during the overnight hours from Friday into Saturday.
Russia launched more than 340 explosive drones and decoys and 35 ballistic missiles at targets in Ukraine, many of which the Ukrainian military said it intercepted.

President Donald Trump on Sunday announced the United States will sell Patriot missile-defense systems to NATO, which will provide them to Ukraine.
Trump also threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Russia if Putin does not end its war against Ukraine within 50 days.
Russian and Ukrainian officials last met in Istanbul in early June, but that meeting ended quickly with no cease-fire agreement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has offered Russia fresh peace talks as he seeks to speed up an end to the conflict.

Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, has proposed a meeting with Russian officials next week, as no progress has been made to end the war.
On Friday night, Russia launched 300 strike drones and 30 missiles against Ukrainian cities in one night, affecting the Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Dnipro, Sumy, Kherson, Volyn, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Zhytomyr regions.
In an address to the nation on Saturday, Zelenskyy said: “Everything must be done to achieve a ceasefire. And the Russian side must stop hiding from decisions.
“Prisoner exchanges. Return of children. End to the killings. And a meeting at the level of leaders is needed to truly ensure peace – a really lasting one. Ukraine is ready for such a meeting.”

Talks between Russia and Ukraine are ongoing to see the return of prisoners and they are continuing to implement agreements reached during an earlier meeting in Istanbul.
Zelenskyy ended his speech by thanking the people of Ukraine for helping in the war as he said that they will never forget those who have fallen.
“We must all remember that our state’s independence is built on the resilience and patriotism of our people, our Ukrainian heroes – heroes of different generations who have defended and continue to defend Ukraine.”
Russia is open to peace with Ukriane but insists on achieving its goals, says Kremlin spokesman
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says achieving “our goals” remains a priority. U.S. President Donald Trump gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face tougher sanctions. Moscow continues to intensify its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. The Kremlin has insisted that any peace deal should see Ukraine withdraw from the four regions that Russia illegally annexed in September 2022 but never fully captured. It also wants Ukraine to renounce its bid to join NATO and accept strict limits on its armed forces.
Peskov and other Russian officials have repeatedly rejected accusations from Kyiv and its Western partners of stalling peace talks. Meanwhile, Moscow continues to intensify its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, with more drones in a single night than it did during some entire months in 2024, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate.
“President Putin has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring the Ukrainian settlement to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible. This is a long process, it requires effort, and it is not easy,” Peskov told state TV reporter Pavel Zarubin.

“The main thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear,” he added.
The Kremlin has insisted that any peace deal should see Ukraine withdraw from the four regions that Russia illegally annexed in September 2022 but never fully captured. It also wants Ukraine to renounce its bid to join NATO and accept strict limits on its armed forces, demands Kyiv and its Western allies have rejected.
President Donald Trump threatened Russia on July 14 with steep tariffs and announced a rejuvenated pipeline for American weapons to reach Ukraine, hardening his stance toward Moscow after months of frustration following unsuccessful negotiations aimed at ending the war. The direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul resulted in several rounds of prisoner exchanges, but little else.
Trump said he would implement “severe tariffs” unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days. He provided few details on how they would be implemented, but suggested they would target Russia’s trading partners in an effort to isolate Moscow in the global economy.

In addition, Trump said European allies would buy “billions and billions” of dollars of U.S. military equipment to be transferred to Ukraine, replenishing the besieged country’s supplies of weapons. Included in the plan are Patriot air defense systems, a top priority for Ukraine as it fends off Russian drones and missiles.
Doubts were recently raised about Trump’s commitment to supply Ukraine when the Pentagon paused shipments over concerns that U.S. stockpiles were running low.

Russia fired more than 620 drones and long-range missiles overnight, killing four people. U.S.-led ceasefire talks aimed at pausing the over three-year war have stalled. Ukrainian air force said it had downed 319 Shahed drones and 25 missiles, adding that one missile and about 20 drones hit “five locations” On Friday, Ukrainian drone and shelling attacks killed three people in Russia.
Kyiv and Moscow have stepped up aerial strikes over recent months, and U.S.-led ceasefire talks aimed at pausing the over three-year war have stalled.

“Twenty-six cruise missiles and 597 attack drones were launched, of which more than half were ‘Shaheds’,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, referring to Iranian-made drones.
The Ukrainian air force said it had downed 319 Shahed drones and 25 missiles, adding that one missile and about 20 drones hit “five locations”. It did not elaborate.
Mr. Zelenskyy said the strikes had killed at least two people and wounded 20 in Chernvsty in the west, far from the front lines of the east and south.
Six persons were wounded in Lviv, also in the west, while in the east, two people died in Dnipropetrovsk and three were wounded in Kharkiv, local authorities said.
The Russian Defence Ministry said it had targeted companies in Ukraine’s military-industrial complex in Lviv, Kharkiv and Lutsk and a military aerodrome.
On Friday, Ukrainian drone and shelling attacks killed three people in Russia.
U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg is due on Monday to begin his latest visit to Ukraine as a Washington-led peace effort flounders.
On Friday, the Kremlin restated its opposition to a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine, after French President Emmanuel Macron said Kyiv’s allies had a plan “ready to go… in the hours after a ceasefire”.
Tuberville says Trump health issues exacerbated by ‘fighting the radicals’
President Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where leg veins have difficulty sending blood back to the heart. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala) suggested the president’s health condition could be a result of his efforts in “fighting the radicals.” Tuuberville also bashed Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.
“The pressure on somebody like President Trump right now, not just from outside entities … all over the world but also fighting the radicals in this country,” Tuberville said during a Sunday interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s “The Cats Roundtable. ”Every day it’s almost like a fistfight.”
The White House announced Thursday that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where leg veins have difficulty sending blood back to the heart. It often results in ankle swelling and is common in people over the age of 70.

On the show, Tuberville repeated baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump and claimed that illegal immigrants were voting in droves for Democrats.
Tuberville also bashed Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.
“He’s a communist! No police? Are you kidding me?” the Alabama senator exclaimed.
Mamdani called for defunding the police in 2020, but vowed not to do so during a June debate. He identifies as a Democratic socialist.
Catsimatidis is leading a coalition of wealthy business leaders to back Mayor Eric Adams’ bid for re-election as a way to oppose Mamdani, Politico reported in June.
