The Ulrich story began in 1990 when Jerry Ulrich founded Bluegrass Portable Buildings in Kentucky after spending 21 years as a missionary in Costa Rica. What started as a small, family-run operation quickly became a mission-driven company focused on improving lives through functional, high-quality structures.

Jerry’s son, Jonathan, was hands-on from a young age, even learning to build a shed on his own at just nine years old.

In 2001, Jerry relocated to Texas and partnered with his son David to form Ulrich Barn Builders. By 2003, Jonathan left high school after his freshman year to become the company’s first full-time product design consultant. At 18, Jonathan purchased half of the company and, by 2014, became the majority owner by acquiring his brother’s shares.

Jonathan’s leadership marked the beginning of a new era. In 2015, he founded Ulrich Holdings with a goal to expand nationally through partnerships with other values-driven, family-owned businesses. By 2017, the company had established a presence in Bakersfield, California. A year later, Ulrich partnered with Willard Martin of Dry Creek Mini Barns and Steve Byler of Byler Barns, a respected Virginia-based company with a 46-year legacy.

Today, Ulrich has delivered thousands of sheds, cabins, garages, and outdoor living spaces throughout California, Texas, and Virginia. “With a combined 250 years of industry management experience”, the Ulrich team brings both knowledge and passion to every project.
