Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a plane crash near Louisville International Airport on Tuesday, with the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department warning of injuries and “ fire and debris ” at the active scene involving a UPS aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration tweeted that UPS Flight 2976, en route to Honolulu, crashed around 5:15 p.m. EST.
UPS confirmed in a statement the flight had three crew members on board.
LMPD said injuries were reported after it issued a shelter-in-place for all locations within five miles of the airport, which is one of the busiest cargo airports in the world and is the home of UPS’ global air freight hub.
Aerial footage from CBS affiliate WLKY News showed a large area beyond an airport runway seemingly set ablaze by the crash.

UPS said it has been “notified of an incident/accident involving one of our aircraft” in Louisville.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
A large plume of smoke could be seen near the airport, which is closed, according to the FAA.
The airport confirmed there was an “aircraft incident” and that the airfield is closed.
“Kentucky, we are aware of a reported plane crash near Louisville International Airport,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said on social media. “First responders are onsite, and we will share more information as available. Please pray for the pilots, crew and everyone affected. We will share more soon.”
