Over the last month, the U.S. State Department has made a number of updates to the advisories it issues to citizens who plan on visiting a foreign country.

Some, like the advisory level for Switzerland, were kept at the lowest rung of the four-tier system with just a few small updates specific to 2025. Others, such as those for Cuba and the Dominican Republic, were specifically upped and singled out under the new Trump administration.

“Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists,” the June 18 update for the latter country now reads. “Do not display wealth and be wary of meeting individuals from online in secluded locations.”

‘Some areas have increased risk’: new travel guidance for India

On June 16, the government has also updated its guidance on traveling to India. The South Asian nation is now at level two’s “exercise increased caution;” this rating is shared by countries such as France and Italy, while the fourth tier is reserved for countries actively at war or lacking diplomatic relations with the U.S.

The guidance newly singles out some specific areas, such as the administrative region of Jammu and Kashmir in the north and the Pakistan border in the east, as “do not travel” amid military conflict between the two countries. In early May, the Indian military fired a series of missiles into the Pakistani-controlled territory in Kashmir in retaliation for an April 22 attack that killed 25 tourists on the Indian territory.

“Exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism,” the updated advisory reads. “Some areas have increased risk. Rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. Violent crimes, including sexual assault, happen at tourist sites and other locations.”

The Maharashtra and Telangana regions have also been singled out as ones for travelers to avoid due to the periodic occurrence of terrorist attacks against the Indian government from several extremist groups.

‘Immigration laws are taken very seriously’ (countries issue the same advisory for the U.S.)

The advisory also includes updated guidance on entry and exit rules to urge caution if entering from certain countries with which India has been at increased conflict, such as Nepal and Pakistan.

“Violations of Indian immigration laws are taken very seriously,” the advisory now reads. “India may imprison, fine, or deny entry to travelers without valid documents or the correct type of visa.”

More on travel:

The latter travel warning sounds almost identical to the kind of updates a number of other countries around the globe have made for the United States amid the Trump administration’s anti-immigration focus and high-profile cases of tourists getting caught up when trying to enter the country legally.

“A criminal conviction in the United States, false information regarding the purpose of stay, or even a slight overstay of the visa upon entry or exit can lead to arrest, detention, and deportation upon entry or exit,” the German Foreign Ministry wrote in an advisory issued in March 2025.

“Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations,” the Canadian advisory now also reads. “U.S. authorities strictly enforce entry requirements. Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices.”
