UTRGV Athletics Unveils Vaqueros Sports Network Through Partnership with Radio United
All UTRGV football English-language radio broadcasts will be carried by Ultra 90.1 FM in the Rio Grande Valley and Pure Country 95.7 FM in Laredo as part of the Vaqueros Sports Network. All home and road football games will be available online through the Radio Para Mi App. The station has a coverage map that extends as far west as La Grulla, as far east as Brownsville and South Padre Island, north of Raymondville and Linn, and as far south as San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico. A 40-year broadcasting veteran, Bowling has served as the lead play-by-play voice for Rio Rio Sports Live for the last eight years. He started his broadcasting career in Missouri, where he spent more than 30 years as an air host, host, and play-By-play announcer for more than 10,000 live sporting events. He was also the lead host for a syndicated sports talk show airing throughout the state.

– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Radio United announced on Tuesday plans for all UTRGV football English-language radio broadcasts to be carried by Ultra 90.1 FM in the Rio Grande Valley and Pure Country 95.7 FM in Laredo as part of the Vaqueros Sports Network.UTRGV Athletics will broadcast all home and road football games on the aforementioned stations beginning 30 minutes before scheduled kickoff with the pregame show.All broadcasts will also be available online through the Radio Para Mi App in the UTRGV Vaqueros section.”We are excited to be able to start building out the Vaqueros Sports Network with stations in two regions that are important to our university,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athleticssaid. “We are pleased to be able to broadcast Vaqueros Football throughout the Valley through the significant reach of Radio United. Additionally, to make Laredo part of our radio network provides strong institutional synergy as UTRGV expands new academic offerings to The Gateway City.”UTRGV is expanding its Master of Education in Counseling (clinical mental health counseling) degree to Laredo, alongside its existing locations in Edinburg and Brownsville. In addition, UTRGV’s bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science will have a physical location at the University of Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo. Like UTRGV football, these classes will kick off in fall 2025.Since partnering with the UT Education and Research Center in 2022, UTRGV has introduced a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Science in Social Work. In 2023, the university signed a joint admission agreement with Laredo College to facilitate seamless transfers and collaborated with Laredo ISD to train graduate students in school counseling.Ultra 90.1 FM (XHRYS) is a 100,000-watt adult contemporary station that mainly caters to those in the 25-to-54 age range. He started by broadcasting high school sports for his own internet radio station and 956Sports.com while also contributing to several local newspapers as a writer and photographer. He joined CBS 4 as a sports anchor and reporter from 2011-17. During that time, Bowling also served as the lead play-by-play voice for high school sports broadcasts on both ValleyCentral.com and RGVSports.com.In 2016-17, Bowling served as the primary color commentator for UTRGV men’s and women’s basketball broadcasts and has since filled in on both play-by-play and color as needed for a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer.In 2017, Bowling founded Rio Sports Live, which has garnered more than 59 million views for more than 10,000 live sporting events over the last eight years.
