VCU School of Public Health to offer online M.P.H. degree
VCU’s School of Public Health will offer a fully online version of its Master of public health program. The asynchronous option is suited to working professionals who are balancing academic, personal and job responsibilities. Applications for the spring semester open Aug. 13 on SOPHAS, the centralized application service for public health. The M.P.H. program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, now includes the online option.
The M.P.H. program is closely linked with local, state and national public health agencies, enhancing students’ understanding and application of public health whether they pursue careers in research or practice. Whether in-person or soon online, the master’s program frequently attracts students who have studied biology, social work, kinesiology or a related field and want to expand their public health knowledge.
“This program advances VCU’s mission to expand access and student success by removing barriers that have historically limited who can pursue and complete graduate education,” said Lauren Snellings, M.P.H., an instructor in the School of Public Health. “It broadens representation in the public health workforce by making the M.P.H. degree more accessible to nontraditional students, including those with varied educational, professional and life experiences.”
In the new online program, students will be exposed to the same benefits of the traditional program – including experienced faculty, strong academic support, hands-on and applied-learning focus, and real-world connection to local and state agencies – without having to live in the Richmond area to attend classes.
With full-time enrollment, the program takes two years. The expanded, part-time enrollment options allow students to complete the program at a pace that fits their needs and circumstances, usually within three to five years.

VCU’s Graduate Education Innovation Program offers a distinctive tuition and fee structure for out-of-state and international students, making the program more accessible and affordable for students.
