As Texans prepare to hit the water for Fourth of July festivities, pet owners planning to bring their furry companions along should take extra precautions to keep them safe on boats and in lakes.

Dr. Erin Ray of Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine warns that while pets can be great company, water settings pose real risks, especially when temperatures soar or lakes contain harmful bacteria like blue-green algae, which can’t be spotted with the naked eye but may cause liver or neurological damage. Basic supplies such as a life jacket, shade, clean drinking water, and familiar comfort items are essential for a safe trip.

Top safety essentials for your pet at the lake:

Fresh water & bowl (no lake water)

Fitted life jacket

Pet sunscreen or shade access

Paw protection & kennel

Medications (if needed)

Holiday activities, including fireworks and barbecues, add another layer of risk for pets.

Fireworks can trigger anxiety or cause pets to bolt, while human food, alcohol, and trash can be toxic if ingested. Dr. Ray emphasizes the importance of early planning, like choosing secluded areas during firework displays or speaking to your vet about anxiety medication. Recognizing signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, seizures, or blue gums, is also critical. With a proactive approach, pet owners can safely share lakeside memories with their animals without sacrificing their well-being.
