Fourth of July travel in Michigan is expected to be record-setting
Michigan is expected to have more than 2.6 million people traveling around the holiday. AAA projects nearly 2.4 million Michigan residents will take a road trip. The busiest days on the road will likely be Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6. Afternoon hours tend to be the most congested on the roads in the U.S., AAA says. Michigan is expected to have more than 2.6 million people traveling around the holiday, according AAA projections. That would be nearly a 3% increase from 2024.
This year, the Fourth of July falls on a Friday. AAA’s travel forecast covers a nine-day period from Saturday, June 28, to Sunday, July 6.
“Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week,” said AAA Travel Vice President Stacey Barber in a prepared statement.
“With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make memories with family and friends.”
AAA projects nearly 2.4 million Michigan residents will take a road trip, up 2.5% from the same holiday period last year. Another 96,000 residents are expected to fly domestically, and more than 160,000 to travel by bus, train or cruise.
Nationally, about 61.6 million people are expected to travel by car throughout the country and 5.84 million are expected to fly to their destination. Both would set new records.
If you’re planning a road trip, AAA recommends getting routine vehicle maintenance ahead of your trip. Last year the agency responded to nearly 700,000 emergency roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries, flat tires and running out of gas.
The busiest days on the road will likely be Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6. Afternoon hours tend to be the most congested.

AAA also offers its Tow To Go service annually for busy holiday weekends, including Independence Day. Residents can call 855-286-9246 for a free ride and tow for one person, within a 10-mile radius.

By Car: AAA projects 61.6 million people will travel by car, a 2.2% increase over last year, and the highest volume on record. This Independence Day holiday period is expected to see an additional 1.3 million road travelers compared to 2024. AAA recommends getting routine vehicle maintenance ahead of your trip and packing an emergency kit. Last July 4th week, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 emergency roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries and flat tires, plus people locking themselves out of their car or running out of gas.
Drivers are seeing some increases at the pump, but summer gas prices are still the lowest they’ve been since 2021. This year, the price of crude oil has kept gas prices on the lower side. The Israel Iran conflict has driven up the price of oil in recent days but not dramatically. Escalation and duration of the conflict are two factors to watch. Weather is also a wild card. The Atlantic hurricane season is underway, and NOAA predicts a 60% chance of an above-normal season. Storms along the Gulf Coast can affect oil refineries and disrupt fuel deliveries, leading to a temporary increase in gas prices.
For travelers who are renting cars, AAA car rental partner Hertz says Thursday, July 3rd is expected to be the busiest day to pick up vehicles. Some of the top destinations based on advanced bookings are also on AAA’s list of most popular places to visit over July 4th: Orlando, Denver, Boston, Oahu, and Seattle. Hertz says most drivers are looking to rent SUVs and midsize sedans.

By Other Modes: Travel by other modes is expected to grow by 7.4% over last year. AAA projects 4.78 million people will travel by bus, train, or cruise. Holiday Forecast Methodology
Travel Forecast
In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.
Historical travel volume estimates come from MMGY’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM. The PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. MMGY contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, forecast U.S. travel behavior and position brand, all after the trips have been taken.
The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 19, 2025.
Because AAA holiday forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes, whether traveling for work or leisure. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.
Independence Day Holiday Travel Period
The Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6. Historically, this holiday period included only one weekend. The expanded travel window was instituted starting in 2024 with historical results calculated back to 2019 using the new nine-day period.

Parents don’t realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees — hot enough to melt some metals.Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.Never point or throw fireworks at another person.Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.”Using (fireworks) in an unsafe and incorrect manner may lead to serious injury or death,” Annapolis Fire Chief Douglas Remaley said. “In addition, structure fires have occurred from non ground-based fireworks that don’t land where people want them to land, so it is best to leave the fireworks to the professionals.”
