UK airport strikes: everything you need to know
More than 100 Gatwick Airport workers have announced industrial action during the 2025 Easter Bank Holiday weekend. The strikes involve employees of Red Handling and include flight dispatchers, baggage handlers and check-in staff. They’re taking action due to issues including unpaid pensions and breaks between shifts. Unless a resolution is reached between bosses and employees, around 50 flights a day during one of the airport’s busiest times could be impacted.
In 2024, many travellers had their adventures from airports across the UK impacted due to a series of strikes, as border force workers took action over pay and working conditions. However, airports such as Heathrow did turn to contingency plans, avoiding some challenges.
While staff numbers have steadily increased to cope with demand, the cost of living crisis – largely caused by inflation and unforeseen multi-industry price hikes as a consequence of global and political issues – is the main reason for the latest sweep of walkouts.
Here’s what we know so far about the ongoing travel strikes, how they may impact your journey, and what can be done to ease the pre-holiday stress.

Unite’s general secretary Sharon Graham said, “Workers have had enough of Red Handling playing fast and loose with their retirement plans and waiting weeks for pay they are rightfully owed for their hard work.”
She continued, “The union will not stand back and watch members be treated in such an appalling way and they have the full support of Unite in this dispute.”
When is GCSE results day 2025?
If you are unable to collect your results in person because you are on holiday, or for any other reason, you can usually arrange in advance for your school to send your results to you via e-mail or post. E-mails will usually arrive on results day, post may take a little longer – but this can vary from school to school so please check with your teachers.
E-mails will usually arrive on results day, post may take a little longer – but this can vary from school to school so please check with your teachers. Speak to your school if you will be away and would like to receive your results remotely. They will explain the process and give you information on what you need to do.
If you have a change of plan on results day, and haven’t arranged to receive your results in advance, don’t worry – the envelope containing your results will be posted to your home address. Give your school a phone call on the day and explain and they should be able to help you out.
You can also nominate someone else to collect your results on your behalf, but you will usually need them to sign a letter and bring photo ID. It’s best to check the rules with your school if you want to collect your results this way.
Lanzarote floods: is it safe to travel and should I cancel my holiday?
Torrential rain and flash floods in Lanzarote prompted a state of emergency. Roads, homes and hotels were flooded in the tourist towns of Teguise, Arrecife and San Bartolomé. There were several power outages and a number of flights were cancelled. The weather was down to Storm Oliver, which has hit the Canary Islands
The weather was down to Storm Oliver, which has hit the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal over the past few days and has triggered several weather warnings. It follows weeks of showers across Spain and, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), March was the third wettest on record. On Saturday, the worst day for rainfall, almost 60 litres of rain per square metre fell in two hours, waterlogging roads and turning streams into rapids.
While the storm has subsided, the UK Foreign Office has stated that those in Lanzarote or travelling to the island should follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.
