Wellington High School Athletes Commit to College Sports

Wellington Middle-High School Celebrates First College Signing Day

It’s a proud moment for Wellington Middle-High School as it marks a significant milestone with its first senior class and its first athletes signing to play college sports. The school, which opened in 2022, has already made substantial progress, with its football team reaching the Colorado Class 2A state title game last fall.

The Rise of Wellington Eagles

The excitement surrounding the school’s accomplishments continues to grow as Wellington celebrates its first college-athlete signees. According to athletic director Hilarie Bartling, “This is a dream come true for them and our school. I’ve known most of these seniors since they were at least 7th graders. Seeing them grow and develop has been an honor for everyone here.”

A Historic Signing Day Event

Four Wellington athletes signed to collegiate programs, with two football players committing on National Signing Day at Wellington’s The Amp church. They were surrounded by friends, teammates, coaches, and family members, marking this achievement’s significance.

  • Cash Altschwager – First-team all-state football star who signed with Chadron State.
  • Izabella Bartling – Future Women’s swimmer at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
  • Zach Swedlund – Committed to Luther College for football.
  • Jasmine Tafoya – Joined Trinidad State College for softball.

Legacy of the First Collegians

Altschwager, who will head to Chadron State, was an all-state honoree last fall. He voiced his pride in leaving a legacy for future athletes, stating, “We produce great players and there’s plenty more to come. Even though we’re a small town, we have so many athletes capable of this.”

The First-Ever Female Collegiate Athletes

In a groundbreaking moment for Wellington, not only did the school send players to collegiate levels, but it also included its first female athletes. “Now we have two girls who will be our first two female athletes going to college. We’re very proud of their achievement,” shared Bartling.
